Any preceptors??

How have you all gone about finding preceptors for clinicals in the past?? We're responsible for finding our own, but I'm having a hard time. Most places have told me they're not affiliated with the university, so now I feel like I dont know what to do!! It seems as if my fellow classmates know someone who is already an NP/PA, so they aren't having much of a problem.

Contact your state NP association and see if they can help you. You might also want to inquire at local college health services to see if they have NPs on staff who might be willing to precept. Good luck!

I agree this is tough. I'm attending an on-ground program that has recently decided we will be responsible for finding our own preceptors here in Illinois. I am not from Illinois and have never worked in this state so I don't know any nurses or NPs here either. We have to have preceptors in-state too, which is really tough. We can't travel out of state to find them. I would. I'd go anywhere in the US if someone said "yes" and they would allow it. I am going to contact some of the rural area clinics and see if I have better luck there. I'll travel anywhere in the state to get this done. I also don't know what the going rate is for preceptors in this area either so am not sure how much money to set aside per clinical to pay them. Frustrating but we will get through it! I mostly had personal friends who I already knew that helped me out with precepting.

I have a couple of friends that are in NP school now, I can't wait to be a presceptor!

Your peceptors have to be affiliated with the university? That really sucks!

I dont know that for sure, but many of the places I visited preferred that I was. So now I really dont know what to do!! :confused:

Check with your school to see which preceptors still have current contracts for precepting with the school, or which have had contracts in the past. The school kept records of current and expired contracts on the Blackboard type program at my school.

And...if you find a preceptor who isn't affiliated with the University, they can become affiliated.

I was asked to be a preceptor for a university where I've never had any affiliation - all they wanted was an application from me.

where in illinois are you and what clinical experience are you looking for. I am in illinois outside St louis let me know if I can help. I work in a rural clinic and they have med students pa students and I am sure they have Np students

I am in the Chicago area but am willing to travel anywhere in the state if I have too. I'm just trying to line up preceptors now for next summer/fall when I start the clinical/residency portion of my program. Thank you very much for offering to help. I'll be looking for preceptors for adult health 1, adult health 2, women's health, peds/adolescent's health and then we have a residency we have to complete our last semester. I don't know much else at this point. Right now I'm doing advanced patho and theory. I'm sure we will find out more as the terms march on but I like to have my ducks in a row. Thank you again!

I am confused by this too because some programs take nurses from all over the US online, but my online program is saying that students can only go so far for preceoptors because of BON contracts??? So how do other schools have students nationwide? I am moving two states away and don't know how this is going to work...

Well I am bumping this thread because I want feedback from others- who else had state limits on preceptors? What if you were mainly online? I had no idea there were contracts with BON regarding preceptors- I wonder what that entails.
