Malpractice Insurance for Nurse Massage Therapist

by lyv33

I was just wondering if anyone keeps malpractice insurance for being a nurse massage therapist? I have thought about pursuing this field, but worry about malpractice. I would like to know if anyone has heard about any malpractice cases against massage therapists and how often this happens?

I've been in the massage field for almost 10 years and I've actually never even heard of anyone getting sued...really. Even one of my former instructors who serves on the state board said that he hadn't heard of anyone getting sued. Now, I'm sure somewhere in this country a few massage therapists have been sued, but I wouldn't worry.

The malpractice insurance I had a few years ago was $250/yr for one million dollars of coverage...no kidding.

I have been a massage therapist for seven years after working in a hospital as med surg RN. I carry malpractice insurance and it is very reasonable. $129.00 a year for very good coverage. I do some work with a local hospice as an independent contractor of massage and they require me to have malpractice insurance.

I recently paid for my malpractice insurence as a Nurse Subcontractor who also does Nurse Massage and my rates went up from $ 89 to $ 300 this year with NSO. Yuck...

Thumbs up Re: Malpractice Insurance for Nurse Massage Therapist
I only work in a massage therapist role and not a nursing role, so my rates are very reasonable. I have never heard of a massage therapist getting sued. Good luck in your new venture. Nurse kelly

In Alabama, it is part of our licensure as an LMT to provide proof of malpractice coverage. I was recently visited by our nice state inspector & that was one thing he did ask for, as well as my Establishment license & State license posted in a public area. As an RN, I have carried malpracitce insurance since school, renewing annually. Alabama is law suit happy state, & since I live in the capitol city, I see my fair share of lawyers & students. Have lawyers as clients. All advice that insurance is a good idea. Plus, my personal business is an LLC.

This is a tricky topic. I'm a member of the National Association of Nurse Massage Therapists that has been tackling the issue of dual licensure liability insurance for years now. The laws of whether massage is in the scope of nursing practice varies from state to state. Some Nurse Massage therapists work primarily as nurses when they massage, and others primarily as massage therapists. Liability varies with the role.

I carry separate policies, one for RN & one for LMT. Two different companies. I just feel more confident without the confusion.

I wonder if you one license gets affected if the other one does since you carry the title nurse massage therapist.
