HELP!

I recently moved from a field infusion nurse position to infusion manager in the company I work for. Clinical decision makeing is not an issue. I have already been asked to cut nursing dollars from the buget by redesingning the pm triage psition to about 50% the original $ (and sevice) I am now expected to hire per dieum infusion nurses. To cover holes in the staffing that are long standing as well as new ones. The problem is I know zip about how "per dieum" works or what is a fair expectation for committment. Can anyone share their experience regarding this? How is this reimbursed hourly or by the visit. What is a fair reimbursement for availability by pager? Anyone know what the going rates are in the Boston area?

Hi. Thought I would let you know my view on per-diem nurses. Per-diem are a great tool for your budget, but are not required to give you any standard time.I have many per-diem nurses on staff. When I have an open shift I notify all of my per-diem staff until filled. Once they accept the assignment, I hold them accountable to be present and avail. I pay $2 / hr to carry a pager, and if they get paged, then straight time of what my FTE make. If not paged, they make the flat $2 in pay for the hours on call. The budget only needs to have an estimate of Per-diem hours with the call rate standard. Hope I helped a little. Let me know.
