Looking for salary advice

Hello, all.

I am a 13-year RN with 10+ years Level I Critical Care experience. I have my BSN and CCRN. Two years of charge/preceptor experience.

I recently interviewed for a job for a staff nurse at Univ. of Chicago in ICU. During the interview (and after looking at my resume) the manager offered me a assistant manager position. The position is salaried and the management is wondering what I would expect in terms of salary.

My question: what is a reasonable expectation for annual salary for this role? I have no idea as I have always been hourly and I am new to Chicago and Chicago cost of living.

What is the going hourly up there these days? I might be able to help you from there I was a manager up around there years ago but I know how much over staff I made.

I wouldn't want a salary for that responsibility and location. You will be working on average close to 60 hours a week period. Your days are never a 8 hour Monday through Friday. NEVER! It's more likely a 12 hours plus hours m-f. Unless they have 2 assistant's, take that into consideration.

A lot of it depends on what your actual duties are. Is it an administrative position, or does it have a large clinical component. I was in one salaried position where I rarely worked the floor (as in months between) other than sometimes doing charge. And the nurses took off their own orders, so there was plenty of time to do other work without being chained to the desk. Probably worked about 44 hrs per week.

Another place I was at, the assistant managers were supposed to have at least one administrative day per pay period, but it was pretty much a glorified charge nurse position with a daily patient assignment. At least there I did get paid straight time for any additional hours worked. I was a 0.8, usually worked 64-84 hours per pay period.

some nurses may have been there 30 years, making top dollar, but as assistant mgr you probably want to be very close to what they are making.
