Would you marry a Doctor?

Nurses Relations

Published

Im new to this site and have been looking around. I was pretty shocked to read so many nurses saying they would never with a capital N, marry a DR? Are you kidding me? I would love nothing more to fall in love with and marry an intelligent, powerful, rich man who I have something in common with (healthcare). In fact, that would be like a dream come true for me. I dont get it???

200K won't go far.....if.....

- there is alimony for wife #1 and #2

- the children from the above mentioned unions must go to private schools

- same children must have coaching for their AP algebra and physics; plus ballet/piano/violin/cello lessons

- late model european cars are the only suitable transport ... at least three in the household

- nobody ever cleans their own home/car/boat/pool or does their own gardening

You get the picture .... LOL

And don't forget medical school loans, taxes, liability insurance

You are really mistaken about most doctors. This is a really sad and ignorant view you have of doctors. It seems you have some anger towards them because maybe you didn't have a good relationship with any of them at work. Just my guess. Most doctors are smart about how and where they spend their money, they are only married once, not all drive late model European cars and actually the wife drives a minivan because it's more practical, and some doctors go to school on scholarship and therefore don't have much in outstanding school loans. Of course, like any other person, there are some that get divorced and do have lots to owe in school loans, but that is not the majority. Think before you type such an ignorant, ridiculous response.

Unless their parents were wealthy and paid for school or they got an amazing scholarship package....Doc's have a tremendous amount of student loan debt to go with that "sexy" salary.

Actually, there are more doctor's than you think that get a full-ride scholarship. And even if they have huge loan debt, they can pay it back in no time with the salary they make. Most doctor specialties make well over 200k a year and they are doing just fine :) They are able to pay back any loan amount in a few years, unlike the 20-30 years it takes an average salary person.

That's why I married another nurse! Well, all except the "rich" part. Of course, the community college non-debt more than makes up for the hundreds of thousands of dollars that a physician would be saddled with.

The part I've bolded was unnecessary. And nasty.

I don't know pedicurn, and I don't know why she holds the opinion that she does, but I will say that thirty years or so ago, she would have been spot on. I knew many, many physicians as she described, and I was asked out by married doctors so frequently that I stopped turning them down. Instead, I'd say "Yes, that sounds like fun. I'd LOVE to meet your wife." (Only a few ever took me up on that.) I think the doctors of this generation are different, and I've read studies that bear this out. But for those of us who remember how things were in the 70s and 80s, it's harder to remember sometimes that things have changed.

I love some doctors, hate others, for the most part though, I wouldn't want to be married to a doctor, rough hours, stress, possible conflict and 2 people bring home every possible infections bacteria is too much for me. But there are bad, jerk doctors and good, polite, friendly doctors. It's all dependent on the person themselves, not the title.

Agreed, JZ_RN. I would marry based on personality, not profession.

I almost did...not for the money though. Granted their salaries are much higher than a nurses salary but I don't think it's anything to write home about. I dated a man whose family was "old money" and the lifestyle was something I could definitely get used to! Unfortunately, he bored me to tears in the end.

Marry someone you love! However if I were a doctor you would be the type of nurse I'd steer clear of! Lol.

Would my financial situation be better than the current one of living paycheck to paycheck had I married a "rich sexy doctor" instead of my "poor mexican cook" husband? Certainly it would.... But money doesnt buy happiness nor do expensive lifestyles equal love.

I would rather love and happiness over wealth any day... for those that are married to doctors and have all of the above cheers to you... I just dont get those that set out looking at the bank account first and the person second.

Great Post!! You said it the best!!

I wouldn't decline to marry someone because they were a doctor, but (although I am fond of doctors) I wouldn't marry someone only because they were a doctor -- there has to be more to it than that.

Um, has the OP worked with doctors yet? It's kinda degrading to think that we, as nurses, are all looking for a "handsome, powerful, wealthy man" to marry. Might have been true in the 50s, but not now. The wealthy part comes much later--they have hundreds of thousands of dollars of student loans to pay back and it takes years. The power part is true to an extent, but so many let that power go to their head. There's a joke that doctors don't have a God complex, God has a doctor complex. That's a fairly accurate statement. True, there are some nice doctors out there but they are few and far between. Besides, they're on-call and have plans delayed or cancelled with emergency situations a lot. I've worked with docs that were very condescending toward the staff, nice to pts, but mean and snap at staff and even their own girlfriend/wife/exwife. I hope this was a joking post.
