We had an ICU evening charge nurse who used to do room inspections. One day we knew she was going to do it, so everyone's rooms were spotless and perfect. She came into one room, was visibly disappointed that she couldn't find a problem, and finally sputtered that the nurse had too many pens in the cup on the desk. Oy.

Our hospital had a smoking cessation campaign that was optional for staff to take on their lunch breaks. So weeks of this " inservice" went by and myself and several of my co-workers ( including our asst unit manager) still had not found the time to participate. ( because like all other clever decisions...they ALWAYS schedule these damn things during a.m med pass or 5 mins before shift end)

Anyway, I digress.....on this particular day, our asst manager ( who used to be a bedside nurse with us) tells us we are being pulled off the floor because we hadn't taken the cessation inservice...." what about my pt's??" I asked...." it's Rec therapy time...they're fine for a few minutes" says asst manager. " Hmm....I don't think so. It's an optional thing anyway, right? I don't feel right about leaving my pts unattended...plus I still have my accu-checks and charting to do" says me. " No, you have to take this inservice" states asst manager....So I make sure there are 3 CNA's and 2 other RN's willing to keep an eye on my pt's. ( Thinking I will make a brief appearance then bail!

As I go into the conference room...I am the only one there! WT...???!?! After about 5 mins...I was just ready to leave when asst manager returns with the inservice facilitator....------ * wait for it *.....

" Sorry about that...we just popped out for a quick ciggie"

COOOMMMEEEE OOONNNNNN!!! Seriously?????

"The hospital always errs on the employee's side"... A lie told to me by management attempting to explain why I wouldn't be getting paid for the extra hour I worked on the fall back night in 2011.

I'm looking forward to my switch to nursing. My company always errs on the managements side.

Im lucky to have my boss listening to all your stories. My manager is not in charge of vacation times, we hae to go through HR. When i told her my vacation for my own WEDDING didn't get approved (i already have the date) she was like "I'll take care of this."

She emailed HR and forwarded it to me. she told HR that i was a wonderful worker and i deserve the same respect that i give the hospital. She said that if i didn't get approved for my time off, she will tell me to call in sick to those days. My manager is a tough cookie, you don't want to mess with her. She tells it like it is, she isn't afraid to stand up to anyone. If you respect her, your job and the hospital you will get every ounce of respect back. If you don't...she will let you know and you don't want to be on her bad side :)

therefore, i'm thankful for my manager!

This is great. I actually left my last jobs for, among other reasons, having a manager refuse to give me 2 days off so I could get married, when I asked 6 months in advance. She said they would have to wait and see what the unit's staffing needs would be as the date got closer and could not guarantee me anything. Yet somehow she was able to approve the other nurse's request for time off for a Christmas wedding, despite the fact that vacations during December are against hospital policy

After finishing my MSN, I started looking at positions that required a MSN; however, after speaking with my manager I was told just because I have a masters doesn't mean I should pursue other opportunities. Basically, I took this as you will forever be a med/surg nurse no matter what. I put in my resignation a few months later and currently switching my specialty area.

Off three days for IV Abx for a kidney infection. Too many back to back UTI's, you know the story.

DON: I sure hope you have your Dr's excuse.

ME: Yes, here it is.

DON: (looks at it) Kidney infection? Goodness sakes! Are you wiping properly??

Another classic. I got fired from my case management job on a Friday afternoon. At the end of the termination speech, "you are on-call this weekend, you know".

Are you kidding me? My response would have been, "I DARE you to call me." And as for the kidney infections, how inappropriate!

Hospitals do too. Note that I said my managers' statement of "the hospital always errs on the employees' side" was one of the weirdest/funniest things management has ever said to me because it is so obviously untrue.

I was working Home Health and my manager asked me why I didn't spend much time in the office doing paperwork, making phone calls, etc. I told her that I do my assigned visits, finish paperwork during the visit, in the car or while grabbing lunch and just stop by to get supplies and leave paperwork. I explained a typical day, what I actually do on visits, etc. She said "You spend entirely too much time with your patients." I asked her "Why is that a problem, as long as the work gets done. I've never refused an extra visit or admit." She said, "That attitude and behavior will not cut it at this agency." So a thorough, caring, team player who enjoys visiting with her patients is NOT who you want working there?
