Nurses Relations

Published

Hi my lovely nurses , I'm Sam and it's my first topic , excuse my English I'm not native , I'm still young and I'm learning to control my temper and attitude , I love my work so much even if it's killing me and I feel old already , but why the **** docs think we are working for them !!? We are both working together for the patients only , I had many fights with docs and I been called to the nursing office for that *badass* , and I hate when my nursing director main concerne is pleasing the docs !!? Why nurses forget how hard the job is when they get promoted !! Once I was the in charge and a doc told other nurse something like I don't know how did you graduate medical school I got so angry and We had an argue and as usual she ran to the nursing office , I have no regrets I will keep defending myself and others , all the nursing office people know me well already , we worked hard to be nurses , we are not spending enough time with our family and beloved ones cause we are too busy saving lives , they should understand that ,we have feelings and treating us badly is so so so unfair , let's just not overrated bad docs , don't get me wrong I have no hard feelings toward them , I do respect docs but some are too much ,just imagine the care we could give the patients if we worked hand by hand in harmony as one team, Thank you

"Defending" yourself and your colleagues is one thing; "fights" and "arguments" with physicians is something else. That is unprofessional behavior in the workplace that is never going to turn out well for you.

I totally agree that some doctors are testy. Many physicians lack basic interpersonal skills when interacting with other members of the multidisciplinary team.

Nonetheless, perhaps I am somewhat sensitive when the words 'slave' or 'slavery' are mentioned. Respectfully, nothing in the original post seems slavish. It sounds like a linear transaction between freely consenting entities.

Nurses who dislike their jobs and/or colleagues are free to resign at any time and for any reason; likewise, management is free to terminate our employment at any time and for any reason. True slavery would entail a master who arranges for the dogs and posse to chase after unpaid human chattels who escape from the fields. In a nutshell, this simply would not happen in present-day America.

I agree: we are not slaves. We are being paid for the services we render. Comparing the situation of a paid nurse to that of a slave is a bit melodramatic.

Most physicians (hospitalists) treated me well as a nurse, their communication skills were often lacking though (they were so overworked, I felt bad for them). Only one physician, a surgeon, thought I was his personal secretary and wanted me to enter all these post-op orders for his patient. He also was not clear with the orders, and became frustrated when I kept asking him to clarify (but hey, patient safety). There will always be difficult coworkers, the key is learning how to appropriately and professionally handle them.

To me, it sounds like you do not handle interpersonal conflict well and resort to arguing, which only makes things worse and is very unprofessional. I agree with The Commuter that "slave" is the wrong term for what you are describing. If anything, perhaps the physicians make you feel inferior to them, which you are having trouble responding to without becoming hostile. The "fights" you have had with the physicians are very concerning, to be honest. Maybe seek some help from your organization or elsewhere in order to learn to resolve conflict in a professional way.

As I said I'm trying to control my temper and attitude even if it's hard for me when I'm surrounded by all the hard work environment , I will try to solve the problems in the professional way in the future *lets pray nothing will happen* thank you💗

I GUARANTEE you something else "will happen." And you need to be ready to handle it like a mature adult. Getting into fights is not a mature way to handle conflict.

It sounds like you need to seek some professional help for your anger management problems before you find yourself out of a job and with no one willing to give you a good job reference. The most precious thing we have is our good reputation. If you lose that, you will have worked hard for a license that you cannot use because you have burned all of your bridges. You NEED good job references. Being "well known" in the nursing office is not necessarily a good thing and may backfire on you big time. Conflict resolution can include standing up for oneself, but that is not accomplished by having "fights." There actually are seminars on conflict resolution in the workplace. You might start with something like that, or perhaps therapy to help you learn how to control yourself when you feel insulted or insecure.

I concur. We cannot control other peoples' behaviors; however, we can control our responses to their behaviors. This is the key to workplace interpersonal relations.

Nobody can "make you mad." Rather, you choose to "become mad" as a response to statements someone made or actions someone took. Next time, choose to control your temper and do not "become mad." Each time you lose control of your temper, you have allowed the doctor to get to you and rent your valuable head space. It is not worth it.

Temper tantrums, verbal fights and arguments are grossly unprofessional responses to other peoples' behaviors.

Nursing is a job for grownups. Childishness is generally not tolerated. If you think you're "too young for this ****", you probably are. Best seek other forms of employment if you have trouble seeing yourself as an adult.

Never had a problem with a doctor. Occasionally have had them be short with me or irritated it called them 500 times at 3 AM, but never have had them talk down to me or treat me poorly.

I think it's about your attitude, if you go in with a poor attitude about being treated like a "slave"....its more than likely going to happen.

When a doctor asks me to throw in a few orders for me i think of it as team collaboration, i dont throw a fit about it. In fact i'm happy to help our over worked physicians. And most times they are very thankful for the help.
