  1. Do you think Visiting Nurses should be exempt fom parking violations while on duty?

    • Visiting nurses should never get tickets on duty, they are taking care of loved ones.
    • I don't know.
    • Visiting nurses should take full responsibility for finding somewhere to park, patients come 2nd.

Hi everyone.I am a visiting nurse. I go to the homes of multiple patient's on a daily basis. Today I was slapped with a parking ticking for double parking my car while alternate side parking was in effect. I really tried to find a parking spot. I drove around the area for over hour. Parking is extremely difficult in and city/urban area. What is a visiting nurse suppose to do in such a case?I feel like nurses should be excuse/ exempt from such tickets while on duty. Humph!Anyway can you all give me any suggestion on how I can get out of paying this $115 ticket? #lifeinnyc

Nurses are not above the law. Ambulances have rights over private citizens because they are responding to emergencies. You may be a nurse providing care, but generally home care is not emergency care. Public transportation is plentiful in NYC, take advantage of it if you can't find parking on a routine base. Your poll is a bit biased, but I picked the last option anyway.

No way, no how will I work in South Philly where double parking is a way of life.

Their traffic, cough, "laws" are unbelievable. You'd fit right in.

A Lesson in South Philly Parking

This driver has the right idea. Now if only his Odyssey were a little slimmer.

I think OP would rather eat the $115 cost , NYC transit is a nightmare. Trains are seldom

on time and dealing with crazy disturbed people is ok at work but on the train .. Forgetaboutit

Unfortunately for you, NYC parking is a fierce game. I would make my life easier and use public transportation to city clients. It would save you hours and money. Good luck!

As has already been said three times, this ^.

If I had access to the NYC public transit system, I'd sell my car for scrap.

I just got my first ticket as a visiting nurse. Street cleaning rules. My option was to get out of the house by a certain time, or park really far in the ghetto with shady characters on the street corners. I got out 20 min past the parking time, and 5 minutes before that was when I was issued the ticket. I think it sucks. I believe in certain circumstances if we had a plaque or sticker of some sort, we should not get ticketed. However, I am glad I risked the ticket instead of my safety.

Have you tried putting a sign on your windshield stating you are a visiting nurse visiting a patient? I would not double park, but i have put the sign up when I am illegally parked.

Contact your councilman or whatever you have there. Maybe they can help you.

Maybe you can even get an ordinance passed.

An ordinance to double-park and become a hazard to emergency vehicles, etc, all while blocking other motorists' cars?

Sorry, but you did violate the law. That doesn't mean you shouldn't try to fight it--after all, you have nothing to lose by trying, and you may just land a sympathetic judge who will reduce or toss it out. Also try the sign in the windshield...or maybe have a friendly talk with the cops of the local precinct to see if they can help you out in some way so you can avoid this in the future. But ultimately following the law your responsibility; if you don't follow them (whether by choice or chance), you have to deal with the consequences.

Also, consider how the person you penned in by double-parking would have felt if he/she was trying to go to their own job and couldn't get out of their parking spot. That's happened to me, and it's pretty darn frustrating. Then picture yourself in their shoes--what if you were on your way to see a patient but someone else penned you in by illegally double-parking?

In all honesty, would you feel differently about the matter if you were the one trapped? Especially if by being late because of this, your job was jeopardized?

That's why the laws are there.

This is exactly my point. We should get a plaque or sticker. Teachers and Diplomats do!

The entitlement in this thread is strong.
