I walked in on a guy during my practicum. Cute guy and my age-ish, which made things even worse! He was a walky-talky sort with a crappy prognosis who was stuck on the BMT unit for a few weeks while we waited to see whether his numbers would do anything to allow us to treat.

Anyway, I knock, think I hear a "come in" -- and WHOA HIS PENIS IS RIGHT THERE AND HE'S MASTURBATING! My first thought was actually shoot, his weener is a bit smaller than I'd imagined and then I start cracking up. Like, tears rolling down my eyes laughing so hard. Beat a hasty retreat (I know, I'm punny) out of the room before I injured his ego any more. We both apologized profusely at a more appropriate time.

A few days later, while on rounds with the doc, same patient notes that he thinks that some of the new meds that we have him on (while he's been in the hospital) are causing him some sexual dysfunction issues. The quizzical look that the doc shot my pt was classic -- I started laughing again and had to leave the room.

As a Nurse that has been in the hospital, I must say, I found "Nothing" stimulating or exciting about the Hospital Experience. But, If,. . . And this is a big one, just if, . . . and, . . .. .

I would never be able to rise to the occasion again without $$$$Thousands and $$$$$Thousands worth of very good therapy if someone "Laughed at "Olaf"!"

What is wrong with practicing a little restraint when you are not home in your bedroom? It is not like they will have a back up and blow or something? How long are most people in the hospital? You can't not do it for 3 days. Sheesh!

Here's a fact: you have the right to touch YOUR genitals whenever you want. YOUR genitals belong to YOU.

Having said that, NO, it's not socially acceptable to touch your genitals for sexual pleasure in public places. Is YOUR hospital room YOUR ROOM or your nurses' "workplace"? It's both. I believe YOUR RIGHT to touch YOURSELF for sexual pleasure in YOUR room trumps the nurses's workplace POV. The POV that you should be able to restrain yourself for a few days/wait until you get home makes no sense to my logic given the FACT YOUR genitals belong to YOU. Since they belong to you, why should you wait if you don't want to? If a pt wants to masturbate, s/he wants to masturbate and that pt isn't obligated to wait until they get home. Just because they CAN go without masturbating is no reason they HAVE TO. Read these words carefully, please. I respect all opposing POVs of view but please try and separate your logic from any subjective filters. You may find the practice "gross" and that's ok. For YOU. For YOUR genitals.

Yes, their room is also our workplace. That's why we knock/announce ourselves/pass along in report if this is an issue. If we are responding to a safety concern and we don't knock/announce ourselves then let's just be happy they are ok. I'd rather my pt be ok even at the risk of my/their potential embarrassment, wouldn't you?

Knock. Announce yourself. Get permission from the patient to enter. Even if the door/curtain is open. And if you're still caught off-guard, be happy your pt is ok.

I vaguely remember some study that showed ejaculation lowered a man's risk of prostate cancer. I doubt this guy had that in mind, but who knows?

Either way, people masturbate. I am not, nor do I think anyone else here is, qualified to judge if is a appropriate to do in a hospital room.

I don't think we are required/obligated TO "judge" whether or not it's appropriate. I also don't think we SHOULD judge. As you said, either way, ppl masturbate.
