OMG Say it correctly!

Nurses Relations

Published

There is just somethings that really bother me, specifically mispronunciation of words. The specific abbreviation that realllllly grinds my gears is when a nurse or CNA/PCT says " O2 STATS" O2 "stat"uration?

Anyone have anything else that people misspell or mispronounce that gets them going??

Parenteral. People will say "parental." A parental injection! No, don't think so!

People who say All-timers. Knowing when you write it on paper you spell it Alzheimer's. UUGGHHH!!

Several years ago one of the nurse educators at a former workplace was giving an inservice on MIs. She pronounced it 'myocardial infraction' instead of 'myocardial infarction.'

I think W would disagree....(although I do agree)

I blame his dad for that. During the Bush I presidency, I noticed many conservative acquaintances pronouncing it "nu-cue-ler" on purpose when they previously had pronounced it correctly.

When Palin shot the level of conservative yahoo-ism to stratospheric heights (standing on the shoulders of GWB) I think people started to turn. "Hey maybe we should stop sounding like idiots."

She pronounced it 'myocardial infraction' instead of 'myocardial infarction.'

Bad heart attack! Stop being such a bad heart attack

This isn't a pronunciation thing, but the other day the APRN asked me whether my resident had a temperature. Inside my head my response was "well, everyone HAS a temperature, you're wondering whether she's got a fever", but outside my head I just responded that she was afebrile. (I'm still new and don't want to make too much of a name for myself as a wisea$$) That one bugs me for some reason.

Hey Hygiene Queen, I love your attitude!!! When I was 18 years old, living in Alabama, and visiting California, I could not believe how I was made fun of. Just because of my thick Southern accent, many made fun of me and thought me stupid. I always knew I was smart, and proved it by graduating nursing school in my 50's with a 3.8 grade point average!!!! I love to hear different people talk! Our differences make the world go around. Who am I to judge the intelligence of someone not speaking like me?

I recently had someone talking about the "arthritis" med when they really meant "thyroid" med. Repeated mistake, big difference. I guess the "rye" sound makes them the same to them.

And "yous". Like: Do all of yous want to come over?". Guys! You is both singular AND plural.

I had a patient once who could not sleep without his oxa-ZEE-pum (oxazepam). I also had a darling little man who would routinely request some didaudid.

Specializes in ORTHOPAEDICS-CERTIFIED SINCE 89.

TIE-nol for acetaminophen? O2 Satch for saturation, Beeper-Cuft for BP Cuff...oh the wonders of the school system.

Now, I love cultural accents . . no problem there at all.

My family is from Arkansas and Oklahoma . . . love that!

:)

I had a parent who would leave notes at the bedside of questions that she would like asked during rounds when she couldn't be there. Well I was going down the list with the doctors and one was a question about her baby's "belly reuben" level, instead of Bilirubin.. It was too funny.
