OMG Say it correctly!

Nurses Relations

There is just somethings that really bother me, specifically mispronunciation of words. The specific abbreviation that realllllly grinds my gears is when a nurse or CNA/PCT says " O2 STATS" O2 "stat"uration?

Anyone have anything else that people misspell or mispronounce that gets them going??

What gets me going is, when people abbreviate medical surgical as med-surge. There is no "E" on the end, it's simply, med-surg or just don't abbreviate.

I agree. However, in the defense of people who have said "med-surge," they may have gone to type "surg" and their auto correct changed in to "surge" (although my autocorrect just tried to change "surg" to "surf").

There is, also, no "t" in "often". It's pronounced "offen".

Actually, it grates on my nerves when people say "off-ten" instead of "offen". Many years ago (back when the dinosaurs roamed the earth) I looked it up in the huge dictionary we had at home that weighed about a ton. It said the pronunciation is "offen". These days, it seems to be interchangeable, I guess. I never hear anyone say "sof-ten", though.

My pet peeves are rales and yankauer. I hate it when people say rales with a long A, and say "yanker," like you are going to yank something. Both are incorrect, and that was drilled into us in nursing school in the dark ages.

Specializes in CCU, SICU, CVSICU, Precepting & Teaching.
My biggest issue is when I say "Thank you" to someone and they say "you welcome" or "you's welcome". It's YOU'RE!!!!!!

I would be ecstatic if someone would say "You Welcome" or "Youse welcome" instead of "No prob." When did "No Prob" get to be correct instead of "you're welcome"?

How is rales supposed to be pronounced? I always say it like rails.

"Oophorectomy." You pronounce both "o's." People pronounce it with an "ooooooph," and that is incorrect. The easy way to remember this is to think of the "oocytes," in which you pronounce both "o's."

Rales is given a French pronunciation. Think of the word "rally." Rales is pronounced like the "ral" part of rally would be.

Ooh, I get riled up with axed too! Another of mine is the prostrate.

Umbilicus. I heard someone say um-bil-LIKE-us the other day and I almost started to giggle. But it was a PA who said it, so I'm assuming that is also a correct pronunciation... I have just never heard it before. :)

This cracks me up!!! I had a patient that I had a running joke with. I could not say "metoprolol" I woudl try and then just say Lopressor. It was my mission to be able to pronounce it correctly. To this day I chuckle when I have to say it :D

I was a pharmacy technician for 6.5 years before nursing school and everyone is killing me with their mispronunciation of drug names. Legit.

How about when you say "Thank you," and you get "OK" as a reply? Drives me nuts. Why bother replying at all??
