OMG Say it correctly!

There is just somethings that really bother me, specifically mispronunciation of words. The specific abbreviation that realllllly grinds my gears is when a nurse or CNA/PCT says " O2 STATS" O2 "stat"uration?

Anyone have anything else that people misspell or mispronounce that gets them going??

To carolinapooh - We don't have Kroger's here in NJ. My sister lived in Indiana for a while and I would go Krogering with her. That explains the misspelling, but I loved that store!!!

Irregardless makes my teeth grind, too, as does words that add -ation to them, like coloration. It's color - not coloration.

I can't beleive no one said exacerbation / exasperation. Not sure I spelled it right, but I can say it. Also I am in the mersa camp. Everyone would look at me strangely around here if I spelled it out.

I'm in allergy, so I hear "Zyrtex" every day and it drives me UP THE WALL! It's Zyrtec (zir-tek), no "s" on the end. The antihistamine is not from the Lone Star state and is not pluralized--lose the s!

I had a manager that did the "pacific" instead of specific thing and would also talk about needing an x-ray of the abdominal. My current manager just twists common phrases, such as "to human is to err" instead of "to err is human." It's all I can do to not correct her.

I do not like it when healthcare workers say a patients name wrong! Drives me nuts! Geez, look at your patient list the name is there written out!!

In all fairness, there are some names that are so complicated or pronounced completely different than how they're spelled. I had one pt name and wanted to buy a vowel because there's consonants in a row! I had another pt refuse to let me administer their injection because I mispronounced her name--it began with one of the lesser-used letters and is about 10 letters long. I usually get names right but missed one syllable with this one.

And "hypoallergenic" dog or cat. They don't exist. The allergy is to the dander, which is in the saliva and skin cells, not the fur.

The only vowel you're likely to get is an "a" at the very end!

I get what you are saying. I work with a nurse who cannot even get pronounceable names correct. I work LTC so it is not like our population is changing day to day. It just drives me bananas that some nurses do not take the time to learn the names of our residents.

We have recently acquired Vocera, so many people insist on saying VOICE-cera. There is no I. When you push the button the Vocera-bot even says Vocera! How are they getting this wrong!?

Yes, this! Ok, I'm going to make one up, but it's similar to a name (and mispronunciation) I've dealt with. If your name is spelled "Rattner" do NOT be surprised if people do not pronounce your name "Ra NET ta." I'm sorry if your mother couldn't spell, but don't get angry at me because I can.
