This is what nursing is. I admire my coworkers, a few of them, who just do not care any more and will talk back to the rude patients in the same way , families, drs, management. those are my heros, and the heros of all passive agressive nurses everywhere.

i worked icu for quite a few years but have just finished a 14 year stint working the med/surg floor. 26 in all of just icu and med/surg. i deserve a purple heart! there is nothing that can even be remotely compared to the diversity and just plain chaos that seems consistent to all medical units. i have worked in small hospitals to moderately sized and the med/surg floors where a-l-l the same.

the drama queens with the bend-my-straw-fluff-my-pillow syndromes, the frequent fliers with the severe pain that is never cured or even truly diagnosed but tends to move from body part to body part and "only xxx drug helps ease it". they demand all your time, complain the worst, while your little cancer patient that truly needs relief ends up with a poop-headed doctor that will barely allow the patient a lortab 5.

then there are the family members that take your name and write down everything you do or write the time down it takes you to answer their call light when they meet with the administrator the next day. then some of these alert oriented upity family members/patients curse you out, and yes, even take a swing at you and knock your glasses off your face and break them. (((supervisor wants to know what i did to upset them....i went to turn momma and change her butt, what do you think i would do after she refused to get up and pooped on herself and i have to turn her to do it.)))

the medical floor is insane and was getting too hateful and too ugly. too many times i saw family screaming at nurses, not just me, shaking their fists at them or taking a punch. the attitude that the hospital is burger king and we are here to give them their way made it dangerous. i thought i would loose my mind the last year or two i was so burned out. anyone working med/surg deserves wings and a golden throne in heaven.

i'm tired of the verbal and emotional abuse thrown at me from patients and especially their families. i'm tired of the condescending and rude comments. i'm tired of those patients and their families who believe that they are better than all the other patients on the unit and deserve vip treatment. i'm tired of management and their "out to get us" mindset. shouldn't we be able to look up to them as mentors and go to them when we need encouragement and help? instead, they look for ways to get us in trouble and write us up. i'm tired of doctors and their "holier than thou" attitudes... that they can't even pause a beeping iv pump but instead go and complain to the charge nurse that their patient is not receiving appropriate attention. who the hell am i, superwoman?! get me out of acute care asap!!
i wouldn't want a doctor pausing a beeping iv pump -- i'd rather they not touch them at all. but i will admit to being peeved when the patient asks for a tissue and rather than handing her one from the box at her bedside, he comes out of the room saying "she needs her nurse." of course that also applies to housekeeping, x-ray, pharmacy, dietary, pt, ot, lab and visitors.

About silencing alarms: One CNA I was working with to clean up a patient went over to the ventilator to look for something on the machine. I said, "What are you doing?" She replied, "I want to silence the alarms."

A little education happened that day, including a very straightforward, "Please never touch the vent settings on the patients." I don't know if she had done it in the past, and no one had said anything. Scary.

Some of the same reasons I just told my manager I'm going back to the OR. I've had enough of pts cussing all day about..when is my dr coming, etc....

Right on. At least they'll be under anesthesia and you can get on with your work. No drama, except for maybe the surgeon.
