I'm seeing a lot of unprofessional posting here related to venting about patients - page 15

by Garethaus

Hi, I'm just a newbie here but I have to comment on what I'm seeing here. Specifically nurses sharing their stories of their interactions with difficult patients. Surely it is unprofessional to be sharing patient details?... Read More

One of the reasons that I think people greatly object to what I originally wrote is that for them to consider stopping venting about patients online, would deprive them of what is a great pleasure in their lives, unprofessional or not.
Whether it's "pleasure" or "fixture", I believe the reality is more likely that people object strongly to a student who believes he has the right to declare the professionals unprofessional.

Tell me, what other outlets for venting about patients would you have us use? Just for curiosity's sake. What method do you feel would be a professional choice for venting? This is meant as a serious, honest question.

Oh one more thing to OP....please familiarize yourself with HIPPA. If you don't understand everything about the rules, then you can't make claims about it. Gotta know ur stuff if ya wanna debate it.
Well actually, I don't think OP needs to learn about HIPAA, since it's a U.S. law.

Looking at what the HIPAA is, we don't have that here in New Zealand either. We have privacy acts that govern that use of patient information but not written in the same way that the HIPAA is written

Not everyone has HIPAA, per se, however I know in Canada we take confidentiality seriously and have our own laws, under different names. I expect this is the same for other countries.

Whether HIPAA or other, I have yet to see anything posted here that would be a true violation. We are sharing stories and frustrations, but not identifying the persons involved.

Confidentiality is big where ever you are nursing. From what I have seen I would have to agree with you SaoirseRN that confidentiality has always be adhered to on this site. If there were no places like this where else can people share stories, find help and vent when they need to.

Sorry but just have to say this...It is quite interesting about all the venting that us students are suppose to be complaining about. No one knows exactly how another person is feeling about a situation as no one has had the exact same experience. One thing I have been taught is to never ever put yourself into another persons shoes as you will never know what they are going though as you have never experienced it. This also counts for those who have been doing the same job day in and day out for the last 50 years. And the person who told me this was a lecturer who is still a nurse.

Should you decide that something or someone is unprofessional, that's fine....and opinions vary. It is not anyone's place to inform nurses on a discussion site that they are unprofessional for venting. We all need an outlet, and you are not the ethics police. AN is moderated regularly, and the moderators will decide accordingly. You the user has the ability to choose the content you wish to view and respond to. It's very simple.
    True enough.

I choose to call out blatantly offensive/abusive language toward patients whether those patients are real or imagined. As you said, opinions vary. As you also said, you have the same ability to choose the content you wish to view and respond to. If it bothers you when someone disagrees with you, just skip it.

On reflection, that should be....what is a fixture in their lives.....

have a seat. a stadium full of seats. & this is coming from a new nurse. & I don't even use this place to vent. you have some nerve being the AN nazi. if you don't like what people are posting move past the post. DUH. just a negative Nancy. I pray you never work in management/are a charge nurse. you seem like a Debbie downer. a black cloud. and you come off as rude. now how does that feel? don't come here being a uppity new nurse. we're new and don't really know crap. get your feet wet first, honey. or better yet get some corns and then speak your part.
