Nurses Relations

Published

People on here need to realize that when you complain on here (and for some that all those individuals do) it really dissuades us new grads from continuing into the profession. First and most obvious question, Does anyone actually like being a Nurse? I mean granted I don't think anyone loves all aspects of their job, but does it seem like a nightmare every day? Secondly, name the best part of your area and your biggest pet peeve.

Sorry had to rant.

:snurse:

I guess I am one of the venter's. But for me it is nice to know that other's feel the same way. It is like a support group!

I have been in 8 years. I think it takes a certain personality to do well in this profession. And personally, being a very caring person does not seem to be the trait that will make you succeed. When you care too much you worry over everything. You take the job home and worry on your days off. You want to do everything the "right" way so you end up working over while others take shortcuts. Nursing is a HUGE responsibility...you know this in school but you don't really FEEL it until you are a real working nurse. I have worked in many areas, hospital, dr office, case management....there is enormous stress with all of them. And now it seems it's all about money with healthcare and it's the patients that get shafted, and you are the one they yell at, and you are the one feeling depressed bacause you CAN'T do for them what you you'd like to. I am so over it. I am incredibly burned out. I am no longer a fun person to be around. I am tearful almost daily. I used to have the nickname "Smiley"!!!!! I am very disappointed in the profession. I am trying to get my finances in order so that I can change careers. I do not care if I take a 50% or more pay cut......it will be the biggest weight off me!!! I am just tired of the responsibility and how it is draining the life out of me. One last thing, this is a 3 day weekend due to MLK and I spent most of it stressing over situations at work. Could not enjoy the days off at all! Oh how I dread tomorrow...

I love when a pt comes through the ICU practically dead and transfering them to a regular floor better almost recovered. To me, that is the most rewarding thing about my job......saving lives. On the other hand, nurses deal with alot of stuff that we dont have to....my worst pet peeve is when dietary messes the food order or housekeeping does not clean it is the nurses' fault, why????? This forum should help you realize that nursing is not what it is potrayed to be and I believe we are helping you be more prepared. We vent out here because it is the only place I can without consequences and most of the nurses here understand where I am coming from.

I had a nurse today counseled for her bad attitude on the unit. She agreed she needed a safe place to vent. I suggested she come here since it is for the most part anonymous. We all need a safe place to spout off when things are really crazy and no one understands like another nurse who's been through the same thing.

You know many nurses do help, that is, when they can. But it is not required of anyone but your mommy to say that "When you grow up and go to work, it'll be a good job with good people and good pay" -- You can't keep hoping things will be this way for you as you enter the nursing world. None of us like it, but really there isn't much we are able to do about it except, OP and others, to be honest.

The students who will be dissuaded by our professional venting should probably not be nurses to begin with. The profession requires a great deal of commitment and dedication as well as the ability to adapt to difficult situations.

If a nursing web site is so disturbing for nursing students that some of them quit...ah well...better now than after they have $50k in student loans for a profession that they cannot handle.

I couldn't agree more.

It is quite interesting about all the venting that us students are suppose to be complaining about. No one knows exactly how another person is feeling about a situation as no one has had the exact same experience. One thing I have been taught is to never ever put yourself into another persons shoes as you will never know what they are going though as you have never experienced it. This also counts for those who have been doing the same job day in and day out for the last 50 years.

Maybe you should try to remember when you too were a New Grad and how you were so eager to learn about nursing in the beginning. And if nursing is so miserable and horrible why not leave the profession and allow fresh new people to take the jobs you seem to despise so much. Nursing is about caring for people and that in it's self will never be a negative for the person who truly does this job for that reason.
Are you speaking to me? You are making a lot of assumptions about me from what OTHER people have written or determined by your own ideas. I don't need a lecture or reprimand from you.

I made a mistake with my post because I don't always post to this site but now I'm sure I have gotten it right. My original reply was to Ruas61. And if you read my post it should make perfect sense that I am not talking to a new grad nurse. It should be apparent that I am speaking of experienced nurses who have forgotten that they too were once New Grads.
You are lecturing not speaking. Big difference.
