Favourite Doctor Moments

Nurses Relations

Sometimes the doctors I work with make me want to cry because they are so damn good. I know we all have our fair share of complaints but what are some of my fellow AN favourite doctor moments?

Here's a couple of mine:

Pt. behaving like a child (20yrs old), performing for attention, mum at bedside. All investigations pending, develops chest pain when told it might be a few more hours before she sees a doctor. Intern checks results, assesses pt., gives her an antacid. Pts' mother- but what about this terrible pain. "Well, all your tests are fine I'm afraid you'll just have to suck it up", while giving her a discharge letter.

One of our very senior consultants being verbally threatened with litigation because he said the patient could go home (she had the flu). "I WANT YOUR NAME" me hiding round the corner saying to myself "please spell it, please spell it.." our consultant "It's (spells it) " then calls security.

Deliver a pt. to pre-op and she decided to flick into rapid AF. I have ALS so ask the nurses for some amiodarone an ECG machine, and a doctor. Anaesthetist walks out and says "just do whatever she says" and walks away.

My all time favourite, consultant and intern chatting to a patient. The patient asks for a cup of tea. Intern- "Oh, one of the nurses can get that for you", Consultant- "Who is getting the cup of tea?" looking very intently at the intern, Intern- "Um, I am?" Consultant- "Bingo".

I am sure I will remember some more but outdo me.

Today, my favorite GP was on call and in a bit of a grumpy mood. Not grumpy at me, just not his usual self when he got to my department. I managed to cheer him up, we had a few good laughs and he left smiling. Later on he brought some med students around on a tour. I greeted them enthusiastically and cheerfully suggested they choose our nice little hospital for their upcoming family practice residencies.

Later still, I called the doc about a lab result, and after we discussed the patient, he said:

"When I saw you were on today, I was happy, because I knew if I brought them round to see you, you would make them feel welcome. Thank you so much, Saoirse."

That made my day!

Old thread but I really enjoyed reading it!

I work on a psychiatric unit and have worked with most of our docs for over 20 years. The medical director is especially protective of us nurses. My favorite moment was after he found out a patient (not psychotic) had threatened me. He went straight to his room, and let's just say put the fear of God in him! Then quickly had him discharged. He will not tolerate patients being abusive toward us. This same doc responds when a panic button is used and has even helped us restrain patients.

I was assaulted 6 years ago resulting in a broken nose and a few other injuries. I was told he was furious when informed about this. He got involved with the fight to make it a felony to assault health care workers.

We also have a doctor who has only been on staff a few years. She has shown great respect for our well experienced staff and frequently asks our opinion. I overheard her tell a neurologist last week that I was an excellent nurse and she trusted my judgement. Made my day!

I had an elderly person visiting family from out of country with no travel insurance and a true A1 emergency medical condition. One of our quieter ER docs saw this man and put a lot of work into the case. I heard from the family that he had come in and waived his fee for the visit. He had a student shadowing him and I truly hope his good example will be noted and taken to heart. He rose about 3 rungs on my favourite doctor ladder that day.
