A surgeon yelled at me...

Nurses Relations

Published

....so I hung up the phone in mid rant. I had 2 hypotensive patients. One was orthostatic; one was due to exsanguination. I'm on the phone with 4 doctors, CT, blood bank, the nursing supervisor,CVICU, and this jerk surgeon. I'm trying to talk to family and control my hot flashes all at the same time. He's yelling at me because orders from day shift weren't carried out. I very calmly and politely put the phone down and went back to work. The supervisor called me and told me that the surgeon wanted me written up. I told my supervisor what happened. He told me to write up the surgeon. So I did. Monday should be interesting. :angryfire

I feel for ya, I really do...If your hospital has an ethical Surgical Services director, perhaps you will recieve an apology from that dastardly surgeon... you do NOT have to take verbal abuse from anyone...congrats for hanging up on him...I do hope you recieve the support you deserve from management.

Recently I was in a very similar situation and 4 1/2 pages later I had finally expressed the facts so clearly that the physician in my case had no rebuttal...and of course, I had no managerial support so after following the chain of command and hearing only "awww, that's the way he is" , I reported him to corporate for his inappropriate behavior. He is a bit more genteel when in my presence and has also begun to understand the "no tolerance" policy as dictated by corporate. He is also very understanding of my personal "NO TOLERANCE POLICY".....

I can only send you a cyber hug but hope that in some way it helps.

I am in your corner!!!!! Keep us posted....

That sort of behavior MUST BE STOPPED !!!!!

Molly, good for YOU! It's time we stopped allowing these people to walk all over us as if one big collective rug. You just set us forward a step. We all need to do this to let such abusers know we are NOT there for their abuse or convenience. WE are PROFESSIONALS, too. Let us know what happens. We are with you 100%.

One of our nurses had to call a doc at 3:30 am due to an unstable change in pt. condition. In mid-rant, she hung up on him.

We cheered. Management backed her up.

it's ABOUT TIME we got assertive with these docs who think they earned a license to act like idiots

way to go! I never allow a doc to yell at me or dis respect me. venting is one thing but yelling at me is another. I have told docs if they did not like me calling them in the middle of the night that they needed to find a new profession.:)

I agree! You are the professional by maintaining your cool! Infantile behavior should be reported! This is a business, not kindergarten! ;)

Isn't it interesting that the doc wanted the nurse written up who wouldn't sit there like an adoring angel while he ranted and raved; but didn't seem as interested in requesting a write-up for those who didn't follow his orders. This doc has some really messed up priorities! LOL! Acting like a spoiled toddler who can't have a cookie!

You did the right thing MollyMo! Good for you!
