I had a question for anyone who may know the answer. I was thinking of obtaining my ADN - RN degree in ND since the California school system is overloaded.

What kinds of issues need to be considered when crossing state borders when your license is garnered from another state different from where you intend to practice nursing? Do you have to pay higher fees? The license would be recognized since both states take the NCLEX-RN Examination, correct?

Perplexed - regarding the Mutual Recognition Model compact state agreement.

I may be wrong, but I don't think there are any ADN schools left in North Dakota. They had a failed experiment of mandatory BSN entry level for new RNs across the state. This was reversed in April, 2003, after losing many nursing students to neighboring states. However, the damage has already been done and all of the ADN schools were shut down. Don't know if any have reopened since April of last year.

Thank you for replying to my message. You provided some very interesting points to ponder for awhile. I have checked out Bismarck State College in Bismarck, ND and wrote the NDBON and they responded as such. I still am concerned about the NLN status however.

The Dakota Nurse Program through Bismarck State College has received

initial approval from the ND Board of Nursing. Yes, you would be

eligible to take the NCLEX-RN upon graduation. The Dakota Nurse

Program does not have NLN approval through the National League for

Nursing. A program is not eligible to apply for NLN approval until they

have graduated their first class. Whether Dakota Nurse Program will

seek NLN approval is not known by our office, as it is not a requirement

for program approval in ND. You can check with the CA Board of Nursing

regarding their requirements, but typically if a program has been

approved by the Board of Nursing in the state in which it is offered,

that approval is recognized in other states.

So, I guess the ADN - RN program at BSC is just so new yet; that the college will not be able to apply to the NLN until the first graduates are done. ??? I am going to research more on this; but thank you so much for bringing this to my attention. I have not yet relocated or spent any monies toward it yet.

Thanks again.

There are Four AD-RN programs in ND- BSC, WSC, MSU-B, and LRSC- these programs combined are called the Dakota Nursing Programs- it is a consortium consisting of these 2 year colleges. They are going on the 4th year of the PN program and the 3rd year of the AD-RN program. I do hope this helps. The AD-RN program had a 100% pass rate on the NCLEX last year. Good luck!
