Thoughts on PCMH (now Vidant Medical Center)

  1. 0 Does anybody have any input about working as an RN at Pitt Memorial in Greenville? I've been interested in working there but attend school in another part of the state and have not been within Pitt before. Non-nursing employees of the hospital have told me it is a great place to work, but I do realize that nursing is unlike any other job. I'm particularly interested in information about ER and Heart Institute, but any input is welcomed.

One of my main concerns is that the hospital is too big, and I'll just be a number in an endless sea of nurses. I will be a new grad this summer, and I have applied to their residency program.

    Thanks!

Hello! I really cannot give you any exact input on how Pitt County works. I am a new grad but from NJ. I went to PCMH last week to shadow a nurse. One thing I can tell you, I had a wonderful time shadowing. It seems like a good place to work. I spoke to several nurses there and all I heard were good things about the hospital. It is a huge hospital. But look on the brighter side, you have a lot options there. Each unit has a manager who would know you as a person, and not just as a number there. I will be starting employment there by summer. When I start, I would gladly give you reviews if you want.

I've been at PCMH for 3 years and I love it! I work in a fabulous unit with incredible people (hey, our motto is "Incredible people providing incredible care, everyday"!) and a wonderful manager and I couldn't be happier! I don't know much about the adult world but if you are into cardiac, you will be VERY happy in the heart center! It is a brand new institution that is totally state of the art. The rooms are MASSIVE and it is a truly beautiful place! I don't know the first thing about the nursing care, management, or any other details of the heart center, though!

If you are worried about the hospital being "too big", don't worry about that AT ALL!! Even though it is a teaching hospital, it is not massive compared to other academic medical centers. I have seen others that are way more intimidating!

Good luck finishing school and getting that first job!!

I applied to PCMH too, and I'm super nervous about the Face to Face Interview! I want to work in the telemetry unit. I'm also nervous about the Assessment test they give too! I'm a brand new nurse, and I know that I will forget some basic stuff because of either not remembering or just being nervous. Any advice? I'm happy to see the great reviews on this site

The test they give you is really to guide you through your orientation and is helpful to determine where your strengths and weaknesses are. When I started at PCMH as a new grad, they told us straight out that most new grads will not pass the exam because it requires a certain amount of experience to be able to correctly identify certain interventions. If you don't pass, there will be a chance for you to retake it several months later.

Good luck with your interview!! PCMH is a great place to work and a fabulous place for a new grad!

    Hi Everyone,
If you can share information about Pitt and what they offer to New grads and there relocation package?

TineyHineyRN, thank you for sharing something position ( especially, something recent). Can you explain the assessment test they give? Do they give you that test during the shadow day or when they actually give you the job. Also, do you they tell the same day as the shadow day that you got the job?

I have prayed and prayed that if I meant to be in a good facility it will be Pitt.

I look forward to hearing from you
    Thank you for sharing

To the best of my knowledge, the PBDS is the guide that is used for a new graduate RN's orientation. Here is a good explanation of this competency exam: http://allnurses.com/nursing-blogs/p...nt-393490.html

Thank you for sharing the link Vicky RN-- will check it out.
Dear Ms. Vicky RN, I noticed you are a Nurse Educator can you shed some light on howto become a preceptor and what it requires? I had great preceptors and I always thought of becoming one. Do you have to obtain a master degree to become a preceptor?

    Thanks

Congrats on your employment!! I will be going down there to shadow soon. I am excited and nervous at the same time. This is my first shadow experience. Did you start in the nurse residency program? How was the interview process and how long did it take until you found out you got the position-- was it the same day ( Shadow) or few days pass? Excuse if I sound anxious. But I have been applying every where and nothing some calls, but nothing solid. However, I feel already connected.

However, I am optimistic ( fingers and toes cross)

    Hey TIGERLILIE,

This is my first time using this site. I noticed we are both out of state new grads looking into Pitt's residency! My interview is on the third of December! I am also super nervous. Which units are you interviewing for? I am interviewing for the MICU and CIU. Did you have a phone interview with the managers first? I wasn't told that the in-person interview was going to be a "shadow" too. Sounds like the staff there are really awesome though. Good luck to you!!!

What exactly are PCMH rates for new grads (especially ICU if anyone has this info), and do they offer proper benefits? I'd like to work there, as it's close to my home, but I've herd about $20 an hour and 8 days of vocation per year... How true is that?

I interviewd for MIU ( Medical Step-Down ICU). Yes, I had a phone interview first and then shadow the unit, which help me get a feel of the enviornment. The hospital is huge , but very inviting. Absolutely, felt connected. Long story short, I was offer the position and I am still soaking up the news. I am so grateful for this opportunity. Wish you the best on your interview-- stay confident and go in there with an open mind. It helped me
