Question re: benefits of working at a community college

U.S.A. North Carolina

Published

Hello all,

Hope everyone is doing well. Currently I am considering accepting a full time position teaching CNA courses at a local community college. I was wondering if any of you are working or have recently worked for a NC community college, if so what were some of the benefits/perks... a free class each semester? how does vacation time/admin time work? etc...

Thanks is advance,

Your benefits will depend on if you're a 12 month or 9 month employee - I have worked in the NCCC system for over a year now and love it.

Thanks for your reply!

I will be a 12 month employee.

My first day was Thursday.

Any info would be greatly helpful!

When I worked in the NC community college system (teaching nursing), we earned no paid vacation time -- your vacation time was when school was out of session. Because of abuses in the past by previous faculty, we were required to put in 40 hours a week on campus and were required to get permission in advance from our department heads to be able to work at home (apart from all the extra time we put in at home anyway, that is :() -- no flexibility about that (but I believe that policy was specific to my school, not a system wide thing). There was no benefit or assistance related to continuing education, as I recall.

I don't mean to sound entirely negative -- I enjoyed my experience teaching at that college (and participating in the larger CC system), but it wasn't a particularly "cushy" job in terms of salary or benefits.
