I know I'm a little late, but I'll be interviewing/shadowing next week for 8E - Neuro ICU. It's my first in-person interview and of course, I'm pretty excited/nervous. Also, I'm from out of state (west coast). While I've done some research, I'd be SUPER grateful if anyone could offer their thoughts about:

    - What's expected during the job shadow?

    - There's nothing mentioned about a 2 year commitment. Does Duke usually require that new grads sign a contract?

    - What is it like moving from a fairly liberal/progressive area of the west coast to NC as a young(ish) male nurse?

    - Hows the local nightlife/music scene?

    - Is there much hiking/camping/mtn biking around the triangle and closer than the Appalachians?

    Humongous thanks!

I am not youngish, but I think the Durham/Chapel Hill area is pretty good social scene. There is a ton to do in Durham, and Raleigh too.

As far as shadowing, they are looking for questions you might have as you follow nurse. I have a shadow interview and I have had people shadow me before the manager interview. I have had some ask zero questions, and some ask as if there was a test at the end. They are looking for your "soft skills" I say be yourself and see if you are comfortable. It is great for the interviewer and the interviewee.

Hope it goes well!!! I love it there!!!

I moved here from Chicago and I love it. There is a lot if stuff to do, there are, like, 6 universities within 30 miles. This part of the state is much more progressive that the bulk of NC. Duke is very diverse.

    Hi Capsaicin!

Can you or anyone provide more insight on what is expected on the Job Shadow portion of the interview. What went on? Do you just follow a nurse around and ask questions? Do they ask you to perform any actually assessments like a ahead to toe assessment?

I have interviewed for a position that I got in the past but it was not a formal 1-3 hour shadow portion. It was more like the manager had me walk around to tour the unit talk to some other RNs on my own about their experience there. Anything I wanted to ask. I could not see it lasting more than an hour really. Anything is appreciated! Thank you!

You are assigned a nurse and you do follow them around and see how things are done. You can ask questions, the nurse will probably ask you questions. I got my job after a shadow interview and I have been the nurse being shadowed. It is so much more relaxing than a formal interview. By the time you get to the NM part, you should feel at home
