Duke ABSN Fall 2011

U.S.A. North Carolina

Published

Hi all!

I know its early and the application isn't due until December 1st, but I was wondering if there was anyone else out there applying to the Duke ABSN program to start in August of 2011! I've already read through some of the previous semesters' threads and it seems like a great outlet for discussion/ questions/ nerves!

Let me know :)

@jcola

If you don't mind me asking, what is your background, as far as gpa, overall grades, degree, gre (if you took it), any volunteer experience (other than shadowing and talking to nurses). I am very nervous because I didn't do very well my first couple year of college, but the last few I did great by making dean's lists and chancellor's list.

I am a flight attendant currently. I have an undergrad gpa of 3.4 and a 4.0 on all my science pre-reqs. I do not have any volunteer experience. It's tough just going to school and working since my work takes me out of the country for days at a time.

I think the suspense might do me in. Shadowing just makes me want this more.

my final GPA was a 3.6. Like you, I've been working and going to school. No volunteer or healthcare experience. I took a circuitous route and finally earned my undergraduate degree in English 10 years after my high school graduation. I did not have a perfect record, but I do believe I was able to successfully articulate what I've learned through my experience. Point being, don't be discouraged by inconsistencies in your record. Just make sure you know yourself and where you want to go. Clearly state your reasons for choosing Duke, nursing, and your plans for the future. Everyone I met on the interview day came from different backgrounds. The program definitely does NOT seem to have a cookie cutter formula for who they will accept, unlike some programs I looked at.

well i started this post but kind of forgot about it until now!

i have a B.S. in business management with a final gpa of 3.5. I have almost finished my pre-reqs (almost done with A&P 2!) and have all As except a B in statistics (grrr business stats). i completed a CNA course through the red cross in october and take my state licensure exam tomorrow! so hopefully ill pass and then im going to try and get a cna job to make some money/ get experience until school starts. i have lots of volunteer experience from college and currently volunteer in the surgical trauma icu at a local hospital. im definitely not worrying about taking the gre.

i was wondering if there are any other recent college grads applying? i graduated in may, decided in the middle of junior year that i wanted to do nursing but figured it was too late to change my major (plus my school didnt offer nursing). ill be 22, alllllmost 23 when i start if i get into duke and i feel like ill be one of the youngest.

also wondering if there is anyone else that is thinking about being a crna in the future. i shadowed a few already and i LOVE it and love surgery/ the or.

hope everyones applications are going well! i need to get working on it...

Hi Everyone!

I am also applying for Duke's ABSN program Fall 2011. I submitted my application last week. Other than Duke I'm also applying to Emory, , and Johns Hopkins. My previous degree is in Marketing. For the past 2 years I've been working in Corporate America. So this will be a big change for me but I'm definitely looking forward to it!

Has anyone been contacted for an interview yet? Or does anyone know when they start doing interviews?

Hi,

T-Dasha - I know from reading previous years threads they didn't start contacting people for interviews until mid December. Last years interviews (for Fall 2010) were in January and maybe the first week in Feb. However, some people contacted the admissions office and found out those dates at the end of November, so you could probably do the same if you wanted to know. And if you do, be sure to let us know!

murph1009 - I wouldn't worry too much about your age. I get the sense that there is a wide range of ages, but most are probably concentrated in the later 20s and early 30s. But I know how you feel. I'm on the other end of the spectrum and often worry that I will be the oldest. Just think of it this way, we help with diversity!

Thanks Oaktown2!

Do you know when they typically notify of acceptance? And how do they notify....email, phone, and/or snail mail?

Again, this is all from previous threads, so I have no idea if things will change. Interview notification is via email or telephone, though it seemed like mainly email last year. Notification of acceptance for Fall 2010 went out in mid February after everyone had interviewed. Previously they had sent out notifications as they went through interviews, but it was changed last year. I think notification is again email.

I was accepted for the Spring 2011 and everything was sent via email: interview/acceptance. My acceptance was viewable on the application page about an hour or two before the acceptance email was sent. Hope this helps and good luck! =)

Hi Everyone!

My name is Mel and I've been reading through the threads for a few weeks and finally decided to sign up. I was born in raised in N.C. and have a B.S. in Psychology from a N.C. university. Life has taken a few twists and turns, but I finally feel ready to pursue my dream! I've pretty much completed my app for Duke's fall '11 ABSN class, but I'm still putting the finishing touches on my personal statement (ok...more like proofreading 1000 times lol). Anyway, the deadline is approaching quickly, and I wish each of you the best with whatever happens. Just know that life can be unpredictable sometimes so go with the flow :) I've learned that when there is one closed door, a hundred more are waiting to be opened. In other words, Keep Trying! Best wishes :)

Hello fellow applicants. Glad to "meet" some other people going through the same experience. I just finished reading the threads from the other semesters and I felt like I was going through the whole process with them. It was totally nerve-wracking! I should have never done that to myself this close to bedtime! haha.

I'm from San Diego, CA. 26 years old with an undergrad degree in History. After college I (got married and) did a community health gig in Peru. Right now I'm working as a nanny and taking all my science pre-reqs at community college.

It seems like the ball gets rolling quickly after the application deadline. I'm very excited!
