Acute care Nurse Practitioner (Masters) programmes nr Charlotte

I have been looking for an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner course in Charlotte and I only seem to be able to find family practice, education and administration. Looks like UNNC have/had one but say they aren't accepting applicants.

If you do an online course (if they're available for ACNPs) , how does the clinical work? I don't have a job as still waiting (3 years now) for Green Card.

I'm a UK RN (plus US) with a Bachelors degree and 24 yrs experience. I was a NP in the UK but it works differently over there. I have done some study at Masters level.

Thought I might as well do something while I wait (poss another 4 years) for my Green Card.

I would just contact various schools to see what their requirements are for international nurses. I would think some things would be different. Also I am a RN in Charlotte looking to further my education with a MSN-FNP concentration. The key is finding out what the market is like for ACNP's in Charlotte. I'm having a hard time finding out what it's like for FNP's, but I hear overall it's better. Right now the market is tight for all nurses because of the economy, but rumor has it that now the healthcare bill has passed in a few years there will be a severe shortage. Are you definitely going to practice here in Charlotte? If you are open to moving, then I would research that area to see what their needs are. Generally ACNP's work in inpatient (hospital) settings, while FNP's work in the outpatient clinics and can see all patients. I spoke with the Director of the FNP program at UNCC and she says MD's want to hire NP's who can see patients of all ages. I think that is specific to Charlotte because that's the market I asked about. From what I've read here on the board even new grad NP's need some RN experience. As an ACNP you'd need some ICU/Emergency room nursing experience.

I am applying to a distance program (UAB) and the clinicals are arranged in your hometown. So if you enrolled in an online program you'd have to find your own preceptors/clinical site here in Charlotte. Sometimes the schools will have contacts from previous students, but the bulk of that responsibility will fall on you. I know at UAB, and a few other schools even though the programs are totally online, there are one or two required campus visits. Hope this helps, and good luck! :)

yes want to practice in this area as we picked it specifically to live in. if we relocated then my husband would have to find another job that qualiied for a work visa ie research at masters level, otherwise neither of us could work!

also don't want to move schools for my son.

so will your clinicals be in the area in which you want to specialise if it was a anp programme, or will the syllabus cover med/surg/ortho etc and clinicals have to be in all of those areas? i guess it's more about clinical decision making, presciribing, research etc

Duke and Vanderbilt (online/distance) both offer ACNP

I now know that UAB is Universit of Alabama, Birmingham:)

Will look into the Duke Programme.

Doesn't look like Duke do the ACNP by distance leaning

Duke will condense classes for ACNP so you can cluster being in Durham-hope this helps!
