I have to take a NICU med test tomorrow and am trying to prepare. Which drugs do you use the most often? I have been focusing my studies on: Dopamine, Amp, Gent, Vanco, Indomethacin, PGE, & Aminophylline. What else should I know??

I did High Tech Home health for many years. When a mom spiked a fever in Labor on the 3rd day the baby was sent home for IV nurses to do 7 days woth of Amp and Gent. Make sure you know exactly how ro draw Peak anf traughs

ps, remember how ototoxic gent is.

Of course I have no idea what your med test will be like. The one I took was designed to be taken by novices as well as experienced nurses. It was designed to assess math skills not knowledge of the meds. It was all about calculating mg/kg and how many cc's of microlipids to add to EBM to get the specified calories per 100cc's (I had never heard of EBM before that moment). All that and I bet I've mixed Microlipids twice in over a year now.

I would concentrate on the more common NICU drugs like Amp, Gent, Aminophyllin, Reglan, Zantac and the code drugs.

I passed! Thanks for your help, the test focused on Indomethacin, Morphine, Pavulon, fentanyl, vancomycin and gent.
