What would make a nurse desireable in a NICU?

I have always wanted to work in the NICU but due to the area where I live and other issues this was not a possibility. I've worked with the adult/geriatric population my entire career but I've always envisioned myself working with neonates and it's very frustrating. I have a BSN and was a good student, but I'm not sure this would hold water next to younger new grads with a clean slate. I have a low threshold for boredom and need new situations and challenges. I feel stagnant in my current work setting (which is so routine and predictable it's hard to keep my mind on what I'm doing.) Still, in these times I'm thankful to have a job, but I don't want to settle for this my whole career. I would even be willing to move (for awhile) to get experience. I keep feeling drawn to Houston, TX. I have children from toddler to teen so a decent area would be important. Can anyone offer any suggestions or advice as to how I could make myself desireable to employers?

You have some good qualities: a BSN, experience as a nurse, even in the adult world is a plus. I train and precept a lot of people and would take an experienced nurse over a new grad any day. Also, you say you like change and the NICU is quite dynamic and fluid. Youike challenges and seem very motivated to achieve your goal. Don't sell yourself short. Go for your dream. You only live once! Best of luck to you!
