Redesigning NICU'S; Can you help?

Hello
I am a fourth year creative industries student. In my final year I have chosen to target medical equipment, especially equipment used in medical procedures performed on children. I feel that there is much that can be done in the redesign of equipment, to reduce, if not eliminate its alien and intimidating nature.
My research thus far has compelled me to concentrate on the relationship between premature babies and their parents within NICU'S. I understand that the primary concern of the NICU is its patients health. However I aim to see if redesign could relieve some of the emotional burden parents of premature babies experience.
I have heard from parents who have spend time with their children in NICU'S. Now I am trying to gather the views of those that work in NICU'S. Any opinions about the lighting, sounds, furniture, equipment etc would be very much appreciated. Your personal experiences and opinions would be invaluable to the success of the designs.
Thank you for any help,
Charlotte Cripps
