Interested in working in the NICU eventually, looking for advice

by Amy E

Hello,
I am currently an LPN working in an ER. I am going to be starting my LPN to BSN program and ultimately I would like to work in the NICU. The hospital I am working at is paying my tuition so I will have a contract with them. We have a level III NICU. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on things I can do between now and graduation that will help increase my chances of getting a job in the NICU and if there is anything in school to really focus on that will help me with any needed skill/knowledge. Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks

Amy,

Does your ER have a pediatric specific area? If it does, try to get in on that. The more exp. you can get in pediatrics wll help. I think the most important thing overall is what kind of name you make for yourself. Be actively involved in some improvement project. Be nice to everyone, learn EVERYONE'S name, from the people who stock your unit to floor crews, maint. Ask people who they know that work in NICU. Get introduced if you can. Be the best nurse you can be where you are...and You can go ANYWHERE you want. Good Luck in your education and your efforts to be a NICU Nurse.

No, we don't have a specific area only for pediatrics. We have one room designed for critical care peds. But other than that they are seen in all areas of the ER. As an LPN I float unless I am working fast track so I try to get in with the primary RN that has a pediatric patient as much as I can. I have been getting some practice at ped blood draws and IV's also.
