SUNY Downstate ABSN Summer 2013

U.S.A. New York

Hi All!

I wanted to start this thread to create some conversation about our application to SUNY Downstate's ABSN program beginning Summer 2013. I've heard a lot of pros and cons about the program and I would like us all to share some of our thoughts! Do any of you have a Bachelor's already? If so what is it in? Where did you take your pre reqs and stuff? What are some of your grades? I took all of my pre-reqs at Suffolk Community College. I received an A in A&P I & II (incl labs), Microbio (incl lab), Statistics, Psychology, Sociology, Developmental Psych, Group Theory/Social Psychology, & English I. I received a B+ in Chemistry and English II. My TEAS V scores are Reading: 91 and Math: 87. I also have my BA from Stony Brook University. Also, I applied to SB last year and did not get accepted to there program. I'm afraid the same thing will happen with Downstate and I do not know what more a prospective student can do! If there are any recent grads of the ABSN program out there please give a shout out! Any advice or opinions will help! Good luck everyone and hopefully we will all be together in the summer!!!!

Hi, I also applied this year. This is my second time applying actually, last year I was put on the wait list and unfortunately not called to head over for the first day of classes. I applied right near the deadline last year so that perhaps is the reason why. I decided I'd do it early this year and applied in the beginning of September this time around, hopefully that gives me a better chance. I have my bachelors in Medical Illustration from RIT, I did most of my prereqs there including Human Gross Anatomy with dissection. The rest of my basic prereqs I didn't have to take at my regular school I took 2 years later at BMCC. My grades were all A's, except for about 3 B's. On my TEAS V I received a 83 Reading and a 93 Math.

I'm hoping this year brings some good news since I was put on the wait list last year. I don't think they take it into account, although I really hope they do. It wasn't until March 14th that I got a letter from Downstate in the mail saying I was put on the waitlist and looked online almost everyday to see if it changed. Hopefully since I applied early this year that'll put me more in the running.

Well good luck!

I also applied last year and was put on the wait list and am hoping for better results this time around. I had only completed one of my pre-reqs when I put my application in last year and now I have completed all of them and have two extra bio courses. I know it is tough school to get into.

Best of luck to all.

I was also waitlisted last year. Hopefully this year I can hear a yes!

Does anyone have any idea about when notifications will start to go out?

Last year, I got my wait list letter in mid-March.

Thanks.

I applied as well--not feeling terribly hopeful. I got in the 90% for everything on the TEAS but math (got a 70%, which I barely managed since I was coming down flu when I took test). I got my GPA to a 3.45 but even with stellar TEAS scores I doubt that will be strong enough. They told me to retake the TEAS and raise my math score, but I'd be shocked if I actually to in this program. Disappointing, since it's the closest school to my home.

For the TEAS test, they only look at 2 out of the 4 scores, so getting a 70% is low when it is only one of two scores that matter. Some nursing programs worry that students that are not strong in math will not be able to handle pharmacology class.

SUNY-Downstate gets a lot of applicants so they can afford to be very choosy. There are a dearth of ABSN slots in the NYC area, thus the very competitive atmosphere.

Good luck to all..I hope we start to hear soon....

Do you know which two they look at? It's reading and math, right? Am I killing myself over my science scores for nothing

Retaking math today, crossing my fingers I can pull a much better score this time!

Yes they look at reading and math. Good luck today!

Got my scores back--87% math, 98% reading--woo hoo! I could have done better on the math part (I ran out of time and started panicking--forgot how miserable life is without a calculator!) but hopefully those scores are strong enough to give me a fighting chance of getting in. Now we wait...
