Stony Brook Basic BSN Fall 2012

U.S.A. New York

Published

Hello everyone!

I applied to Stony Brook's Basic (2-year) BSN program 3 weeks a go and thought it may be helpful to start up a forum.

If you are:

currently applying or plan on applying, a former applicant, a current SBU student, I'd love to hear from you!

Has everyone finished their perquisites? Does anyone else have a not so competitive GPA (like me)? Does anyone know who is considered a competitive applicant? Where is everyone else applying?

I look forward to speaking with everyone and hopefully entering the Fall '12 class together!

Hi all! I've been following this thread for a while so I figured I should finally join in. I'm accepted for the two year as well this fall. Does anyone know when orientation is? Do we go during the summer and get information or is it just the first day of classes in August that everything is thrown at us?

I was wondering/worrying lol if it is possible to work part time and do the 2 yr program. Can anyone that is in the program shed some light on how the normal schedule goes? When classes are typically and when they offer clinic?

When i emailed the coordinator a while back she said "Tentatively the orientation dates are August 23 & 24." and that we will find out about etc. I think i posted all the info she gave me on page 33 or 34 of this blog. :)

Kaywal, at the info session I attended last year they did say it was possible to work part time while in the 2 year program. I don't think it's recommend but they stated that some people do and are fine.

If you go back through this thread there is some info regarding classes and clinicals.

Thanks!

Hi everyone, I would like to apply to Stony Brook's accelerated and traditional program and would like to know how those of you who have been accepted, rejected,

Or waitlisted have done....i'm really been looking to get into stony but would like to know my chances! I've worked hard on my classes but i want to see if maybe they relied more on the personal essay and if maybe i should work with a doctor or do more volunteer work.

Oh, and sorry for the two posts! By accident i clicked to send it before i was done.

Thanks, in advance, to anyone who replies!

Prospectivern, I was rejected from the one year, wait listed from the 2 year and just found out I was accepted off the wait list last week.

I graduated from SB in 2004 with a bachelors in Health Science. Undergrad gpa was a 3.2. I got A's in A and P 1 and 2, Micro, and psych classes. Only thing under an A was Chem 1 and Stats. I volunteered a short period of time at Brookhaven Hospital. My references were from two former managers and my A and P professor.

No one know how they choose who they do. It's not all about grades for Stony Brook. A lot of weight is put on your essay and references. So make sure those are fantastic. I think it totally helped me that I am an alumni of the school. Volunteering is also important. If you can, attend an info session. They can answer any question you have.

Thanks for answering so quickly, amchugh209, and congratulations on getting accepted!

No problem! Thank you and good luck to you!

Hi, about the . I asked them , they said it is the insurance yo get from our insurance company .

Prospective, I was placed as an alternate in the one year program, but i was accepted to the two year.

I have my first degree from Ithaca college and i have a 3.6 in Business communications. I have a 4.0 in all my prerqs that i took at suffolk community college. my Refrences were from my Volunteer Supervisor in the ER, My mentor who was a wound care nurse and in nursing admin in cali, and someone that i worked closely with in social work. I held nothing back in my personal statement, it really helps for the admission process and for you to sit for a min and determine exactly why u want to be a nurse and then just pour it out on the page. I talked about how i went from communications to finding out that i wanted to be a nurse. i talked alot about my experiences in the ER. I think this helped alot because it showed that i was putting my passion into action(you could walk the walk so to speak.) and i talked about my personal experience with my grandfather. i agree personal statement and references speak volumes. grades certainly help but that is not all they are looking for.

Alot of us wrote out our backgrounds at the beginning of this blog. there is also a blog called stony brook 2013 that has alot of info. i read throught them all trying to get the best idea possible on how to go about the applciation process. Good luck to you!
