Hey everyone,

I applied to SBU's accelerated program as well. This is my second time. I actually just realized that I think I forgot to indicate that I had applied last year. Hmm. Oh well. I'm at a point in my life where it doesn't really matter where I am (recently got divorced, just kinda floating through the day-to-day) so in addition to applying to Stony, I applied to maybe 12 other schools throughout the country. Stony would probably be my first choice, but I'm actually pretty excited about the prospect of moving someplace (I've lived on Long Island forever...). So, basically, I just wanted to wish everyone luck in getting into Stony or any of the other programs you've all applied to. :)

Chele, I hope you mentioned your reapplication status in your application. There is a section that asks if you are a reapplicant and asks for your Stony Brook ID #. I am really rooting for you, three times, man that's dedication! Trumped my twice application lol. Just for that you should get into the ABSN and get it over with sooner! :)

Yes! I did mention in that section that I am reapplying, as I did last year. I also mentioned in my personal statement that I was on the alternate list last time, so hopefully that sparks them to offer me admission. :)

Hi Mindylane! Good luck to you, too. Where else have you applied? I have applied to a ton of schools as well - the application fees are killing me.

PS: You can still make a change to your application, you just have to email hscstudentservices (at stony brook dot edu). I just realized I had to fix something, and they were able to help. It is probably worth something to say that you're reapplying.

Hi Chele,

Thanks for your response and good luck in your third go-around! I am cheering for you. Your dedication will pay off this time!! Its my first application cycle and I am nervous that I won't get into any of my top choices - which are mostly the SUNY schools with ABSN programs. They are so much more affordable, I just can't imagine taking out $70,000 to go to NYU or Rochester.

With regards to the two-year application, I wish there was a way they could just copy your reference letters to the 2-year program as well. It was like pulling teeth getting my recommenders to get their letters in on time.

Hi everyone,

I am also applying for the accelerated program. SBU is my first choice but I am also applying to Columbia, NYU and New Rochelle. Honestly, right now I feel like I will be happy if anyone takes me!!! I keep checking old threads to get an idea of when we can expect to get a decision. It looks like we will have to hold our breath until February

Chele- I am so impressed with your dedication. I really hope it pays off this year!

Good luck to all!

LOL, thanks :) I did pretty well despite some personal bumps during the fall semester that hindered my studying a bit. I finished the program with a 3.6 GPA (which earned me cum laude honors). It is possible to get higher, which I believe fully I could have done if I had not gone through some of my problems. However, don't correlate prereqs with nursing courses, they are 2 different animals. Getting a 4.0 is possible, it takes an insane amount of dedication but not many students get that, some do get close though, like 3.94 or something. But honestly, it's not worth it to stress out about GPA if you're not learning the material. Prioritize learning over the numbers, and the numbers will follow, And if you're concerned about high GPA = a job, don't. I still got hired with my GPA even before people with 4.0, and I don't believe it even made a difference in the hiring process. What matters in the end is graduating and passing NCLEX and the networking you do along the way (with instructors and nurses you meet while in school).

Besides, my patients don't care one bit what my grade in pharmacology was ;). Work is going well by the way. I don't regret changing my career one bit. It's the best thing I did in my life, ever.

Hi Paco

Glad to hear you're doing well! Yeah, I've heard from a lot of students it's not worth stressing out over a couple grade points. Everyone says the program is extremely tough so they don't pay much attention to whether they get an A or B, their too busy with everything.

I'm a bit concerned about my GPA because I plan on applying to a DNP program after and my undergrad GPA isn't too stellar. I'll definitely need a good BSN GPA to get anywhere good.

Glad to hear you got a job quickly! I actually wasn;t too worried about finding a job until I read your posts! lol. I thought it wouldn't be to difficult but I guess a lot of people have had trouble :/

Well one step at time! After days of reading and re-reading and re-re-reading my essay I FINALLY submitted it last night. Now it's just the waiting game! I'll be applying to about 10 other schools though so I think the time will go pretty fast. The rest of my applications are due between December and February so I'll have a lot to keep me busy.

Good luck everyone and see you all back here in a few months!! Oh, and out of curisiosity, did anyone apply anywhere else?

Hey guys. To where else did everyone apply?

I am so incredibly nervous and fear that my GPA is just not high enough. I started at Boston University, hated it, and therefore didn't do well (2.81 GPA my freshman year). I then transferred to Stony Brook and graduated with a 3.5 and currently have a 3.5 at Nassau Community College, where I've taken all of my prereqs. I'm taking Bionutrition and Biology right now and have As in both classes so far, which will only bring my GPA up. Cumulatively, my GPA works out to a 3.4 but a 2.81 is something someone's going to notice, unfortunately. I'd like to think that they'll see that it was a bit of a fluke (I was also in the hospital for a week during final's week, which also impacted my performance). I applied to nearly 20 schools this year, so I'm hoping they'll take me SOMEPLACE. I have internship experience (but not much) and have been working in the healthcare/nonprofit field for almost three years, so I'm hoping that'll count for something. Anyway, I'm just not feeling particularly optimistic and am curious as to where everyone else has applied...

I wish you all the best of luck.

Hi everyone! I'm considering applying to the basic/2 year program at SBU this January 2013 and was wondering what everyone's thoughts were regarding the requirement that you must have 3 of the 5 science pre-reqs completed by application time. I'm hoping there is some flexibility there! At the time of application, I will have Stats, Lifespan, Anat I and the "other" science completed (all of which I received A's in). I am currently registered to take Anat II and Microbio starting in January and taking a summer session for the Chem. I will have completed all pre-req work prior to the September start date. I just won't have the 3 out of 5 sciences at application time. I'm thinking of applying anyway because I'd hate to wait an entire year to apply!!! Any thoughts????

I'm pretty sure there is no flexibility with regards to that sciences requirement. From what I have heard it's a hard and fast rule, considering there is no shortage of applicants that have completed this requirement. Anyone who applies without minimum requirements are automatically removed from consideration, specifically the science prereqs and minimum GPAs and grades. I have not heard of anyone getting an exception to this rule, but I guess you can always try.

Thanks for the response Paco-RN! I just emailed the nursing admissions department. I'm never one to look for a shortcut but I'd hate to wait another entire year before applying...I'm getting up there in age, 36 now, and don't want to delay any further!!
