Being bls.certified isnt a pre-req to apply. Once you are accepted, then you need to be bls certified before starting the program so dont worry abt that just yet. Heck, I got into the 1 yr and im still.not certified yet, but I do plan to take the course soon. Lack of a job isnt somthing to worry abt nor will it put you at a disadvantage. Just make sure your personal statement is sincere and genuine and convinces stony that you have what it takes to get thru the prog andddd to be a great nurse. Best of luck! I know that this 1 year program can be quite intensive but I believe it's purely manageable if one has really motivated and able to focus [as well as great study habits]

For the record, I admittedly have lousy study habits and I still graduated (with honors, mind you) .... (and by lousy, I mean that I started studying for a pharm exam 3 days prior, I started writing an 18-page management plan 21 hours before it was due [i got 100, lol] and on average I hardly ever got through most reading assignments ... but that is just me and how I magically roll :) ...) but you are right about the motivation and focus, you have to have that for sure to get through this program! But I must add: I take GREAT notes and I pay attention in class, I don't text or veg out if I can help it, and basically half my studying is done right then and there. I leave the class understanding the stuff, at least half-assed, so when I study it's not all new.

Stony Brook tends to be top 3 in the area (NYU and Columbia being the other 2). The director of the program just told us last week that last year's class (Paco's class) beat NYU in NCLEX rates so I believe that puts us in top 2 :-p

i wanted to find out if people from the program commute and if people commute from the queens area and how it is...i am deciding whether to relocate or to stay in the queens area. can anyone give me input on how the commute is and if its NOT worth it what areas are suitable to live in LI. any info would be greatly appreciated! i do not want to accumulate debt as a result of living off-campus - and live comfortably in the queens area - with having free rent!! do not want to move unless its really necessary and people in the accelerated program were not able to live in the bk/queens/si area.

I commute from Queens Village (Springfield blvd & Hillside Ave). It takes me around 50 mins each way without traffic. I have a family, so to me moving to the Stony Brook area was not an option. I would recommend to try to find a place closer to campus where you don't need to spend so much time commuting and actually utilize the time on school work and other more important things. I have managed to do well thus far (although not as good as I would've liked), but there are many times that I've wished I lived closer ie to use the library, for 7am clinicals, traffic, etc.

I guess I will have to go along with that decision and move to long island ...as much as I would like to stay in queens the demands of the program and commute would be a killer. Thank you for giving me insight into this type of scenario...

Any one know of any good areas to live in close by stony ...any good way to find cheap/affordable housing ...would definitely prefer to rent a room and share living space

My first suggestion is for you to Google "Stony Brook off-campus housing." You will find a link maintained by the school that is regularly updated with listings of people that are renting rooms and apartments to students and staff of the university. It's a great resource, and it's a good way to give you some idea as to what the going rents are for the areas. When I was in the ABSN, I found my room through this website.

As for WHERE you should be looking, having been in Suffolk County for almost 2 years now ... I went to Google Maps and cropped a portion of the area map that I suggest you should limit your search for a living space relative to the university. Anywhere in this region you will be close enough to the school to have a comfortable commute by car (in my opinion) ... about 15 minutes max. Note that the dashed & shaded portion of the map is all considered the hamlet of Stony Brook. The RED star is approximately where the nursing school is within the university. The star with the blue circle is where I lived when I was in the ABSN (I loved the location, and I would still be there if the owner of the house had not decided to move his family in from China). The star with the green circle denotes the hamlet of Centereach, which for some reason was not named in the map but I think a good place to live as well.

I have since moved WAY out of the region of this map and drive 30 minutes one way to and from work at the hospital (next to the HSC where the nursing school is). I hate that I moved so far away but am planning to move back somewhere within this area of the map when my lease is up this summer.

Are you volunteering @ a hospital? Do it now! It's not required to be a good applicant but it will make you more attractive I would think -- especially if you are new to healthcare (as I was). That's just my guess. So by the time you apply to Stony Brook you will have 6 months or so solid volunteering experience. And you want to volunteer in a service that allows you direct access to patients. For instance, don't work at the gift shop. My hospital in FL (before I moved to NY to attend Stony Brook) allowed me to be a messenger. My job was mostly to take discharged patients out of the hospital by wheelchair but I was also responsible for taking specimens and blood draws to the lab. Also, your volunteer supervisor would make a great reference for your application (as it was for me, along with my A&P and micro professor recommendations).
