Stony Brook Accelerated BSN Class of 2014

U.S.A. New York

Published

I'm surprised a thread for the upcoming class of 2014 has not been created yet (or has it). Well here it is!!! Good luck to all :p

Hey guys! I wish you all the best of luck. Just a little word of advice apply to the 2 year program as well if you have the extra classes. I was placed on the alternate list for the accelerated as well, but got into the 2 year program. I also know of people denied from the 2 yr that got into the 1 yr. so really no rhyme or reason lol. Just do your very best. :)

Riding the same boat as Chele, am applying for the third time. Hope we all get in this time.

Application deadline (October 17th) approaching faster than the speed of light!!! Work on those personal statements and make sure you have no regrets. Good luck to all.

Enough of a break, going back to this massive paper which will surely prevent me from feeling a single ray of sun against my skin for the remainder of the weekend :brb:

I figured someone was going to start a thread and it would be chele118 that started it, lol :D Good luck to you and all applicants!!

For those of you that don't know me, I graduated from the ABSN last May. I too was waitlisted the year before and then I reapplied the following year. This is probably the 4th Stony Brook admissions thread I have followed on allnurses. It's a tough program (meaning lots of work). If you put in the effort, you will do well. I can confidently say now that the program prepares you well to sit for the NCLEX, most all my classmates have passed it (I say most because not everyone so far has taken it, so far I have not heard of anyone failing it from the accelerated class).

I'm gonna pass on giving admissions advice right now, given that the deadline is now 5 days away and likely no one needs much advice regarding essays and recommendations right now. You should be on the tail end of your applications if they are not in already.

I'm just gonna sit back and watch all of you sweat it out waiting for decisions, that's my favorite part every year :D (jk)

Anyone who is applying to Stony Brook and live in the city I have a question. Stony Brook requires laboratory portions for the microbiology and anatomy and physiology classes. Anyone know where to take those classes in the city?

Hey Dlam88, I replied to this question on the other thread. I would suggest taking the pre-requisites at a CUNY just based on tuition being cheap. I took mine at BMCC down by Chambers. Any accredited school is fine for your pre reqs, so save your money, get good grades, and good luck!!

Hey Emer1234 thanks for the advice. I will plan to take some of my classes there because I see they offer Anatomy and Physiology together. I however have already taken Human Anatomy I was wondering if anyone knows of a cuny school that offers Human Anatomy with a laboratory?

Welcome to the forum, Paco! After reading the forum from last year I feel like we're old friends! ;) Do you mind if I ask how you did in the program? I have maintained a 4.0 GPA for my prereqs while working full time and have hopes of earning a 4.0 or close to it in an ABSN program. Do you think this is possible or does the work load not really allow for this?

Just out of curiosity because like I said, I feel like I know you lol, how is life going for you after the program?

LOL, thanks :) I did pretty well despite some personal bumps during the fall semester that hindered my studying a bit. I finished the program with a 3.6 GPA (which earned me cum laude honors). It is possible to get higher, which I believe fully I could have done if I had not gone through some of my problems. However, don't correlate prereqs with nursing courses, they are 2 different animals. Getting a 4.0 is possible, it takes an insane amount of dedication but not many students get that, some do get close though, like 3.94 or something. But honestly, it's not worth it to stress out about GPA if you're not learning the material. Prioritize learning over the numbers, and the numbers will follow, And if you're concerned about high GPA = a job, don't. I still got hired with my GPA even before people with 4.0, and I don't believe it even made a difference in the hiring process. What matters in the end is graduating and passing NCLEX and the networking you do along the way (with instructors and nurses you meet while in school).

Besides, my patients don't care one bit what my grade in pharmacology was ;). Work is going well by the way. I don't regret changing my career one bit. It's the best thing I did in my life, ever.

Hi everyone! I've applied to Stony Brook's ABSN as well :) I've been creeping on these forums since last year, and now it is time to begin the waiting game.

Question: I've read others' posts about applying to the 2-year as well as the 1-year program -- do you have to submit a completely separate application (including recommendation letters) and pay a separate fee in order to do that? Is the deadline the same?? If so, I'll have to hurry up!

Thanks for your help, everyone :) We'll have to support each other through this torturous waiting period. Did anyone apply anywhere else? I also applied to NYU to start in the spring, but I'd much prefer Stony Brook.

This is the third year in row I am applying to both the 1 year and the 2 year. Yes, you need to submit a separate application for each program, including recommendations, personal statement, transcripts and the application fee. The deadline for the 1 year is this week, Oct. 17, the deadline for the 2 year is the beginning of January. I have not applied anywhere else, SB is my only choice. Good luck!!

Chele, I hope you mentioned your reapplication status in your application. There is a section that asks if you are a reapplicant and asks for your Stony Brook ID #. I am really rooting for you, three times, man that's dedication! Trumped my twice application lol. Just for that you should get into the ABSN and get it over with sooner! :)
