Stony Brook Accelerated BSN Class of 2014

U.S.A. New York

I'm surprised a thread for the upcoming class of 2014 has not been created yet (or has it). Well here it is!!! Good luck to all :p

my undergrad gpa and pre-req gpa was about the same (~3.55-3.60). but they definitely consider more than just pure numbers.

anyone planning to go to the feb 7th info session?

Do you know if this session is beneficial for those already accepted or if it's more for people who are thinking about applying?

That session is definitely only useful for future applicants. This thread is far more interesting for those already accepted, because we tell you the REAL story :D

I know I am late in commenting but I was accepted for the 2013 ABSN Stony program. I knew it was competitive and did not think I stood a chance. I was a Stony alum but I had a GPA of 3.1. My pre-req GPA was a 4.0 and I thought that my pre-reqs were lacking because I took them just this past Fall AND I didn't even send those grades before I got their decision...

WHY? Because I was also accepted to the ABSN program at UNMC Omaha Nebraska a month earlier. And I accepted and as a native Brooklynite, I am looking forward to this random crazy experience of moving to the Midwest, where I have never been.

I don't know if being an Alum helped me, or the fact that I was a double major while I was in undergrad. I was a Bio/Anthropology major and my Bio grades were no better than B's and mostly C's so I was certain if I didn't do well in science in stony during undergrad they would pass judgement that I wouldn't do so well in the nursing program. I did get 2 reccomendations from my pre-req professors and 1 from an Anthropology dean in Stony Brook, so some familiarity with his reputation may have helped. Also I graduated in 2006 so maybe my professional experience since then as a retail manager illustrated in my personal statement may have helped too.

i went to the session because i also wanted to take a look around campus/health sci center. i spoke to the person after the session with more questions geared towards my particular situation about being accepted into the ABSN program. but yeah the session was pretty much useless. they did give some stats and some info that was useful at the beginning of the session, but other than, useless.

@Paco-RN: which course did you take for the BLS? im trying to find the post where you mentioned it, but no luck

Well, the first time I got BLS certified was in FL. I did the classroom portion online using an interactive format, got my Part 1 certificate that way and then went to a certified instructor to do the skills portion on a mannequin to finish certification.

Last year, I renewed my BLS certification at a local place in Smithtown, the instructor was pretty good. I was renewing, so did not have to take the beginning hour of the 4-hour course, only the recertification part. This is the place I went to: CPR Training NY. I was still a student at the time, so I took advantage of the student discount. But now that I am employed @ the hospital, it will be easier for me to renew through them.

I've had a CPR cert for about 6 years now and have taken classes at various places. Every state/area is different but some places offer free CPR classes. They are not very often (like once a month) at places that have them but it's definitely worth liking into. Try to look at hospitals on your area and community centers and community colleges. The price can vary dramatically in my experience (free or $20 compared to $100) depending on where you go. But again, it also really matters where you live.

Also, make sure it's an American Heart cert., BLS for health care providers. You don't want Red Cross or some other course. American Heart is the most widely accepted

Please has anyone ever gone for Adelphi University nursing interview for the ABSN. I will appreciate if you can share your experience

You should start a new thread for your question, as this thread is only about Stony Brook's ABSN.

I guess you made your decision between SB and Bing?

Hi everyone!

I was placed on the alternate list for the accelerated program, and was wondering if other alternates have heard anything yet? Congrats to those that got in, and good luck to everyone on the alternate list as well!

Does anyone know when we will receive information about loans and financial aid? I completed my FAFSA but I doubt I will get enough to cover my out of state tuition. I've never taken out loans so I'm pretty clueless on how everything works. If I need private loans, when should I be applying for them? I called the aid office today and left a message but no response yet.
