U.S.A. New York

I'm surprised a thread for the upcoming class of 2014 has not been created yet (or has it). Well here it is!!! Good luck to all :p

They actually sent an email today saying they will mail decisions on January 7th and to call them on January 14th of we haven't received it :). Looks like they've changed! I can't believe it's so soon!!

Hi GoVeg is there anyway you can inbox your email because I can't send out message on this site?

owade, post ONE MORE MESSAGE and you will be able to. As I understand it, you will have private mailbox access once you have posted 15 messages on the board, you now have 14 it seems.

Thanks for your help GoVeg!!!!

what was everyones prereq gpa and actual undergrad gpa?

my undergrad gpa and pre-req gpa was about the same (~3.55-3.60). but they definitely consider more than just pure numbers.

anyone planning to go to the feb 7th info session?

That's odd. Perhaps they changed the rules? Sorry for the wrong info.

I think it worked ;). I received a PM :)

i know its crazy for me to ask when numerous number of people do not get accepted. but does anyone know if you can defer admission if you've been accepted, for the following year start instead of this year.thx!
You cannot defer admission for the following year. Once you decline your acceptance you have to reapply and start all over, and the fact that you got accepted once does not mean you will be accepted in the future. In my humble opinion, don't turn it down unless you will be attending another program.

I'm applying too! Working on my pre-reqs now. I've heard it's important to have a student nurse internship to help with getting hired after graduation. Does anyone know if the SBU BSN program includes this sort of internship, or if it is something we could do before hand as an undergrad?

Need to clarify the difference between INTERNSHIP and EXTERNSHIP. Everyone in a BSN program (whether it is a 2-year BSN or accelerated BSN) does an internship as one of the final classes in the program, but Stony Brook calls it CAPSTONE. It's 144 hours and is basically broken up into three 12-hour shifts per week for 4 weeks, culminating with the graduation ceremony. The only difference between the 2-year and the accelerated is that the 2-year program is officially done after capstone, whereas the accelerated program still has to complete community health clinical after graduation (which is a minimal 2-week stint of 80 hours, something the 2-year program completed the year before). An externship on the other hand is an 8 to 10 week working opportunity during the summer between the 1st and 2nd year of the program -- this is not mandatory, but many 2-year students go for externships for the experience it gives them.

In the accelerated program, it's impossible to have an externship because of the fact that it's a one-year run and there is no summer break. Employers understand this and generally have not been disappointed because they already know accelerated program graduates on average are motivated and serious about their entry into nursing. As such, accelerated students compete on equal ground with the 2-year BSN students for jobs. Many, many of my ABSN classmates have had no problems finding work (on Long Island anyway), although some that insist on working in or around NYC seem to be having less luck, thanks to the greater competition of schools like NYU and Columbia that have the privilege of doing clinicals and networking in some of the best Manhattan hospitals. So, as an accelerated student, you are not at a disadvantage for not having done an externship.

I would not worry about trying to get any type of "internship" of sort before starting the program, because in order to get noticed for a job as an RN after graduation, what matters most is what you do AFTER you start as a nursing student.

Thanks Paco, that was a very thorough and helpful response.

Ah Yes lol, One can always count on Paco for thorough and helpful responses
