New Yorker Patients

I'm a new foreign graduate (with US citizenship) and am thinking about settling in NY to look for work. Presuming I actually overcome the hurdles foreign grads face in landing US nursing jobs, I'm just wondering what the typical patients are like in NY? I used to reside in California and I hear that New Yorkers tend to be more up front and abrasive, and that you need a thicker skin?

I am a little confused. If we NY'ers are abrasive, does that mean you wouldn't want to work in NY? I thought being a nurse was all about helping and caring for the sick. Do you honestly believe that every NY patient you encounter will be the same? We are flooded with immigrants and people who have moved here from other states. I just felt a little offended having been born and raised in NY.

Having worked in both NY and NC the only difference in patients is the accent by ours going to get nice, rude, overbearing, sweet, etc no matter where you work.

First, if you are going to label a class of patients at least do so properly. We or they are residents of New York City who may happen to be patients at any particular hospital. You might try to rephrase your query along the lines of a "typical patient" in a New York City hospital to give less offense.

Being as all that maybe as with any large urban area the type, manner and sort of patients using New York City's healthcare system are varied and many. They are black, white, brown, coffee coloured. Straight, gay, bisexual, transgendered. Old, young, middle aged. Rich, middle class, poor and representing almost every nation on this earth. Furthermore to that many hospitals in NYC at least in Manhattan are destination facilities where patients are treated from all over the United States and indeed the world.

Based upon location certain hospitals may have more patients from a certain demographic than others but that shouldn't befront you, nor should it form the basis of stereotypes.

Looks like the OP skipped the Cultural diversity and sensitivity courses in nursing school. FYI you can have rude people anywhere

Since NYC is known to be a melting pot you should already know what to expect. You're going to get a good mix of patients. Rich, old, gay, young, black, purple, yellow, rude, nice, sick, healthy, weird, etc. etc.
