Hi all,

I am going to graduate in December and plan on moving to NYC. I was just wondering if there are any recent grads out there who can tell me about their experience with job hunting, negotiating compensation, etc. What are current starting salaries for a BSN?

Also, do hospitals in NYC hire graduate nurses who have not taken the NCLEX yet? I live in CT and they hire you here as graduate nurses while you prepare to take your boards.

I am a recent graduate living in Long Island, NY and yes NY does let new grads work on a permit for one year while you prepare for your boards. I am a BSN nurse who graduated 2 years ago. NY Cities salaries are a little higher then Long Island pending on where you are going to work? The base in Long Island is any where between 62-65K, plus ed diff and increasing experience as years go by. I beleive the city is in the high 70s and 80s, possibly higher, where are you moving to? If you have any questions let me know. What hospitals are you applying to and just remember although you are a new nurse there is a national shortage, so don't just accept the 1st position go on multiple interviews and choose the best and if you want med surg do med surg if you don't you can get specialty areas, go for what you want. I was offered NICU, ER and ICU and med surg. I did med surg for the past 2 years and then last month I just switched to ER and I also became a SANE nurse this year. Good luck finishing school and congrats on being so close to graduation! I just graduated in May, passed the boards in July, and will begin my first job on monday. I went on many, many interviews and i can tell you the highest for a new grad is about 70,000 and thats starting nights. Definately take your time looking around! Managers and HR constantly try to pain a positive picture for you and you need to be weary. Make sure there is lots of support for a NEW graduate since the nyc hospitals are so busy.

however, it's possible to find cheaper housing. i live 30 minutes from my job, door to door, in astoria (great neighborhood) for EXTREMELY cheap!

Curious RN*05: do you rent or own in Astoria? What do you call EXTREMELY cheap? Also, Do the NYC hospitals hire per diem nurses? Thanks!!

I call extremely cheap 550 a month for a decent and spacious 2 bedroom apartment (roomate paying the oher half). If you want a REAL idea for nyc prices, go to craigslist and look in the real estate area.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I agree that Astoria is a great place to live. My boyfriend is living there now and I'm actually planning on moving into his apartment because his roomate is moving out.

As for NY not hiring graduate nurses, that's too bad. I guess I'll just have make studying for the NCLEX my full time job for January. Oh well... In the meantime I do plan on getting those interviews in. I have Fridays off so am planning on coming into the city for interviews.

Does anyone have suggestions for resumes and cover letters?

And how should I be submitting applications? In person, online? Anyone know of any career fairs coming up for nurses?

Also, I want to work in an ICU setting. Are new grads being offered this at all? If so, is it mainly for nights?

I think that's wrong...I'm currently applying for jobs and I believe that Sloan-Kettering and NYPresb--Weill Cornell hire on permit, and those are only those that I have contacted myself...there may be others, but there's apparently no simple way to find out.....

From many friends i spoke to, and all the interviews all in major city hospitals, i can tell you the highest for a new grad is about 70,000 and thats starting nights. I can also tell you from experience, NO nyc hospitals will hire without the nclex!! In the surrounding boroughs this is a different city but no manhattan hospital honors the permit anymore! I was offered jobs everywhere "pending licensure." This has changed from even 1 year ago. My biggest advice is study for that nclex using KAPLAN (it IS the nclex, i promise) and pass it asap. good luck and let me know if you have any more questions!!

well, i interviewed at sloan and was offered a position pending licensure. i also have three friends that had the same thing - two are starting on monday! NYP-Cornell I can't vouch for.

i am looking now for a job and am having trouble finding a hospital that will hire on permit too. it really is frustrating. most places are telling me to contact them AFTER i get my license. so i havent even interviewed yet. i am a dean's list student and in sigma theta. why is it so difficult in ny?

i am in school in CT and all of my graduating friends have jobs waiting for them already. i was even offered positions in CT myself, but i really want to be in NY.

anyways, i guess i'm just venting. but if anyone has any suggestions about where a grad nurse might look.... thanks very much! i hate to move to ny and be jobless for 2 months until i take the test.

It was very frustrating for me because I am COMPLETELY broke at this point, i wanted to work way back in july! I couldn't find a single nyc hospital that hired on permit.

ICU -- I have heard lots of things. I heard methodist in brooklyn, NYU in the city..you'll have to do a search. personally, everytme i sent in a resume online i had to send it again through fax. I ended up always doing fax. For new grads, the best bet is to keep an ear out for open houses where they do large interview sessions with everyone who shows up. Positions change constantly. The city hospitals ask you to apply online to specific positions but at the end of the day they are going to offer you what they have available on the day you come in. Fax, and call call call! Get IN there in person for your interview. good luck

I am not ny to cali anymore. I decided on NYC. I have heard good things about long island jewish. What other hospitals are good? I will probably live in Queens or LI. Any suggestions? Also I am on myspace, are there any good sites for us new grads???
