New Grad, needs help getting a job at NY presbyterian!!! help

U.S.A. New York

Published

Hello,

I just graduated in May 2010 with an Associate degree in nursing, and I'm having a hard time landing a job in NYC. I currently live in Maryland, but will be moving to the city in 2 weeks. I would really love some advise on how to get a RN job in NYC. I'm really interested in L&D or postpartum. I've applied to several hospitals, and have not heard back. NY Presbyterian keeps saying that I do not have the minimum requirements. I would really love to work there since I'll be living a block away from the hospital. I was a nurse extern at one of the hospitals in DC and did an internship in Rwanda as a midwife. I've graduated from my program and have pass the NCLEX, and should be receiving my license in a week. If anyone knows who I could contact or what to do, that would be extremely helpful . Really need help, I'm just so ready to give up...

Thank you,

Uwera

Not much to add to this discussion....

Except...welcome to NYC. This is how people interact with each other here... nothing personal, we just tell it like it is :)

The market here is horrible. I've been hearing horror stories of new grads sending out 50-75 apps, only to have to take a LTC job as a last resort 1-2 years after graduation. Thanks to the recession, the BSN push, hospital closures, and many nursing schools in the area, jobs are TIGHT. My manager tells me there are 500-1,000 new grads and ADNs on a NYP waiting list to be called back if HR gets desperate enough to staff a unit.

^^^ I've actually heard this too, and very recently. My friend who works at NYP told me that they aren't hiring new grads at all, ADN or BSN. The new "new grad" at NYP is the nurse who graduated a couple of years ago and has a year or two of hospital work experience.

NYC is just not the place to be at the moment for new grad nurses. :(

I work at NYP as a float... so about 3-4 times a month..... and F/T Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center...I live on the upper east side. 20 bucks cab ride. Not bad if you are working small amounts a month but it can add up. UWS.... 70-90's is beautiful. I found my apartment on craigslist. Try to do a share; you can even live in luxury for cheap now a days. Trust me.... I could be a broker after my month of searching. People will come to YOU if you put an ad out of exactly what you want and expect. Just be careful. If you need anything more or have any questions let me know. Thanks :) Good luck.

funny situation is that i am BSN and licensed in NYS. i was told that those hospitals had 3000 applicants ( new and experienced RNs) on the waiting list.. i am working in maryland and loving it now.

i am also thinking of going back to school for my master, but even the quickest program requires 6 months experience as an RN and required BSN. could you please let me know the school you are applying? can you go for it with ADN?

I love maryland, I'm actually from there. Moved to NYC, b/c my boyfriend lives up here and we just got engaged. Otherwise I would have stayed, I already had a job ready for me as soon as I was done with school. And now i've been trying to find a job in NYC. I'm looking at NYU's midwifery program. They don't require you to have experience and they will accept you as long as you have a ADN + a BS in another field.

Thanks for the advice. I've already found a place to live. But I've been having a hard time finding a job, any advice?FYI, I have a ADN and I'm a new grad.

Yeah. I know your situation. Haha I read most of the posts. Please don't get offended by people's posts. As some one said before, they are not trying to be mean to you, they just state the facts. You see, new yorkers don't sugar coat things very often, ( if ever). I went thru everything you are going thru now. I know how frustrated it must be for you after all these time, money, and efforts we invested in horrible nursing school experience. I applied online, went to the hospitals, nursing homes in person but of course didn't get to see a single nursing recruiter. I made phone calls, and end up talking to voice mail most of the time....

I sure hope you will have a Better luck than me! or come back work for 6 months and go back to NYC. Some nursing homes only require 6months experience.

True -- I was born and raised in NYC, so I can tell you from personal experience that bluntness is par for the course with many people there. I for one have the fortunate ability to switch it off and be "kinder" when appropriate (which is most of the time, having lived in the South for the last 4 years has helped LOL). It's something you get used to ... well, you kind of have to if you're going to enjoy living in NY. Good luck with your job search -- something meant for you will come your way!

I have heard wonderful things about the Nurse Family Partnership but I wonder what their pay pay is like? I love public health but as the sole provider for my family I do have to think my income. Does anyone know what pay range is for Nurse Family Partnership?

It's $74,630 per year, you can find it by searching nurse family partnership on the NYC.gov website.

Hi Sweetie

I'm in the same boat as you. Moving from CA to nyc for my fiance. Any update on your situation?

Hey,

No update so far. I have gone to many open interviews and have applied to positions online but have not heard anything. I'm currently looking at home care and visiting Nurses ( but their new grad program is in April and September), but it was too late to apply for the program when I found out about it. How about you, have you found anything?

Specializes in ER.

wow just read through this whole board... drama. haha jk

so does this adn hiring apply to new grads only? because i have my adn with 1.5 years of telemetry and 1.5 years of ER from the los angeles area, and i just sent out my application for NY licensure hoping to land a job there within the next couple of months... by reading this thread it doesnt seem likely i'll be finding a job easily...
