Nassau Community College : Anyone Applying for Spring 2011

U.S.A. New York

Published

Looking for anyone who is applying to NCC for Spring / January start ( or anyone else on the road to applying) who wants others in the same situation to go through the process with.

Is it an essay or a paragraph? Why do I feel like I'm going to be given a placement exam...

Good luck to everyone tomorrow!!!

Good luck to everyone tomorrow! Hope all goes well!

Are u suppose to wear the scrubs to class too or only for clinicals at the hospital? Where did some of u guys get your CPR card? Do we park in regular visitor's parking at the hospital or do we get a permit for that?

Clinicals at Glen Cove (Visitor Parking), NSUH (Employee Lot), LIJ (Street Parking). No passes were ever needed. The school offers CPR classes and you won't need it until 2nd year anyway. You can even do it online, just make sure its AHA.

Scrubs are for clinical only. Good Luck!

Congrats to everyone who got in for the Fall!

I graduated from Farmingdale as an LPN, and will be articulating into Nassau's advanced placement (LPN-RN) program for Jan'12! Super excited!

Can any of the experienced give some insights on what they had to do at the hospital?

When you first start clinical (which is after about 4 weeks the first semester) you will mostly talk to your patient, help with patient care like bed baths, help on and off bedpans or to the bathroom, feedings if the person needs assistance, making beds, etc. (mostly the stuff that the nurses aides do because you don't know much yet).

You will also eventually have to look at the person's chart, medical diagnosis and then the actual "symptoms" they have (or as they're called in nursing "adaptations") and come up with Nursing Diagnosis - that's the hard part at first. Until you get used to the med diagnosis and what nursing diagnosis goes with what symptoms, it's time consuming.

Nursing Diagnosis Example:"Impaired Gas Exchange related to thick copius secretions secondary to Pneumonia"

Translation: patient with Pneumonia (Med Dx) who has a productive cough with thick sputum (Adaptation), adventitious (noisy/not clear) breath sounds (Adaptation) & Pulse Ox of 93 (Adaptation) probably has Impaired Gas Exchange...because all the "gooey stuff" in their lungs is reducing the amount of surface area for oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange which is shown by the low pulse ox reading or 93 (you usually want it to be above 95).

It sounds like a foreign language at first, but after awhile you'll get it. Just remember that it's all going to be totally odd at first. If you keep up with your reading, listen to the profs and ask questions, it will all make a lot more sense by the end of the semester!! Believe it or not, there is a method to the madness

I'm currently a student in the Nursing Program (Just finished my first year). Although we need the CPR certification before out second year (I'm doing mine now over the summer), I believe they changed the policy that all NEW students need to have their certification prior to starting Nursing 101. I could be wrong but I would definately check into it. The NCC websites now states that. I would call the nursing dept to double check.

Yup just found out today. you need your BLS before starting anything. And something about the NLN. The whole landscape of the program is pretty much changing from what I heard from incoming 203 students.

Makes sense though, you're taking care of patients in 101, you should at least have BLS under your belt.

Grindin, I am starting 203 in fall. I am going to be at LIJ - how do they expect you to find street parking on Lakeville Road LOL? WIll they allow you to park it in the garage and pay for it if you want? Are you a NCC graduate?

Hello All! I survived 101 and I am doing my reading for 105. Kuklara, can you recommend any accessory books to help study? I used Fundementals and Test success all through 101. How did you like 105? Compared to 101? :) Enjoy the summer!!
