Just to put things in perspective -- I work at a small upstate hospital - waaaay upstate - above Syracuse. You can see my experience. I'm getting $25.50/hr. That's about $50,000/yr. The cost of living here has NYC beat by a long shot. Hospitals in Syracuse make just a bit more than me. And this is why I am seriously considering legal nurse consulting.

That's a great starting salary... honestly though, I'd be willing to take a little less to avoid an 1199 establishment (although when I retire I will not send back my $110 pension check for 5 yrs service! lol)
What Is So Bad About Unions?
I've only been at 1199, so I cannot speak for other unions... Even though we are represented by union reps (who many times have little to no power or authority), I just felt the union hierarchy was just to painful to effect change or handle disputes and the ever esteemed 'grievance' process was comical at best. If management decided an issue, despite an 1199 uproar and 'call to arms', the writing was already on the wall. Even when 1199 'earned' their dues by negotiating our contract, a year down the road our 4% raise became a 2% raise and we got to keep our medical benefits.. wow! With master negotiators like that....... Personally, I prefer a non-union where ppl come and go as they please and management keeps those who really want to be there.... anyone with similar or different experiences?
