Montefiore- Interview Process

U.S.A. New York

Published

Hi all. Was hoping someone could help describe the interview process to me at Montefiore. I am a new graduate, and have an interview with HR this week. Do they hire right on the spot after the interview with HR? Also, if I am hired, I'm curious about what the orientation process is like for new graduates. Any help/advice/comments would be great! Thanks :)

Thanks estrellaCR! I had my interview already and I'm going to be taking the med exam. They also told me that they will talk to the nurse recruiter then contact me for a second interview. I think I did okay in the interview except that I was really nervous. The HR interviewer was really kind and friendly though that's not any guarantee... I really want to work here as I've heard great things so I really hope all goes well.

Btw, even if you took the job at Kings County, did you eventually hear back from Montefiore and get a job offer? How many weeks after your NM interview was that?

Sigh. I'm so stressed out. I've been 'under consideration' for exactly 2 weeks....I don't know what to do besides wait it out. Maybe I should continue applying to positions ?

Lpark000, I heard back with official offer from Kings County 2 weeks after my NM (MOntefiore) interview. At this point, I contact Montefiore HR and they said Im still under consideration by NM but they do not know when a decision will be made so I let them know I found a job and they dont have to consider me any more and I thanked them for considering me. There are plenty of good places to work besides Montefiore. And I am happy where Im at now with public hospital. Keep your options open. A definite is a whole lot better than a maybe.

RNjobseekerNYbred, definitely continue applying to positions everywhere. Do not put your job search on hold for one hospital who has not contact you yet because nothing is guaranteed...even if HR and NM tell you how wonderful you are at your interview(s). All HR use public relations and say this to all candidates unless you mess up in the interview and their verbal praises are no guarantee of a coming job offer. This hospital interviews a lot of new grads and the process is long. Keep your options open, there are other hospitals or facilities offering equal good learning experiences.

Along with keeping applying, also keep busy....get a related job, volunteer, get certifications, etc. It enhances your candidacy and it also helps the waiting time pass faster rather than just waiting by the phone or email each day waiting to hear back from an HR.

Was the second interview with NM a panel interview?

Keep applying everywhere! I was in your place 2 years ago. It is unfair how hiring is nowadays. But nothing we can do. If nurse education was like 30 years ago and students got lot of hands on practice during clinicals, hospitals would be more open to taking new graduates. However we have students on our unit from different RN programs and RNs on my floor have pointed out how the students spend very little time on the unit and in that time only do assessment, look at chart, and then debrief with instructor in conference room...these are students a few months from graduation also. RNs esp older ones point out how these soon to be new grads are way not ready to start working and how back in their day, RN students did everything and were ready to start work on the floor right after graduating. May be due to liability, the schools do not allow students to practice most of nurse skills on patients...but that is a disservice to students as well.

My school (Hunter College for BSN) had a preceptorship component in which we spent the last semester working one on one with an RN thats on staff at a hospital in NYC. Here we did plenty of hands on (except IV insertion, as hospital did not allow students to do this). However speaking to students i met doing clinicals at my workplace....none of their schools (big private universities BSN programs or Comm college ASN programs) have a preceptorship. Maybe due to having too many students and not enough placements in which case, the schools should admit a manageable amount of students (Hunter had 80 students in each class, meaning 80 graduate per year) so they can provide a more comprehensive clinical experience. I have heard of a private university in Manhattan graduating almost 300 students per Semester! Way too many and this of course makes it hard to get all this students into clinical experience. Students from this university told me how some students had to wait long time to get into a clinical because not enough sites in NYC to accommodate all of them for clinicals (in addition to students from all other schools in NYC).

Yes, I'm continuing to apply elsewhere but so far I haven't heard back from any of them either. I applied to an agency as well and nothing so far. It's probably time to review my cv and/or resume and see if I can improve things. Not going to give up!

I'm a foreign graduate nurse and we had very hands-on clinicals, although there were some restrictions (medical interns did IV and foley cath insertion among other things) but I don't know how it differs from clinicals here. Employers aren't familiar with my school and hospital where I had my clinicals either which I'm assuming might make it slightly more difficult and unwilling to take a chance? It also sucks that I have had no experience at all. Part time jobs or summer jobs back in my country wasn't really a thing. I recently started working as a home aide though with elderly clients so at least there's that though I doubt they'll actually consider it as experience, lol. I hope to get my first RN job soon. Crossing my fingers.

Yes definitely, it is difficult for foreign graduates as employers are not familiar with schools outside the US. Have you tried agencies? I met Korean nurses who got their job through an agency, they had some experience though. But may be the agency can vouch for you in terms of education. My HHC uses agencies and one of them (the one the Korean nurses were hired through) is called Perfect Choice. Are you Korean by chance? Asking bc the Park in your username is often Korean last name.
