Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center

Hello all,

I'm currently a new nurse :nurse: working on an oncology unit in LI but to my disappointment most our patients are med/surg and only small percentage is oncology. I feel like I'm not 100% fullfilling what I love to do which is oncology. I've only been there for 3+ months and I'm already thinking of leaving in the near future (1 or 2 years). I will NOT leave now b/c I still have so much to learn but once I got my experience, I will definity want to move on to a more oncology speciality hospital like Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

I really want to work for Sloan in the near future and I would like to know if anybody or know someone that work there? What are their typical nurse to patients ratio? Their current salary? Benefit? Pension? Working environment? Any information will be greatly appricated!

Thank you in advance! :yeah:

I just started at Sloan. I can't say the nurse to patient ratio as I am still in orientation but I was told depending on the floor 5-6 pts per nurse.

Current salary is 72,100 and if you work overnight (which most undergrads wind up doing) there is a 10% shift differential...so your salary would nearly be 80,000.

They offer several medical plans (too detailed to get into), dental, LTD (i believe LTD is mandatory but don't quote me), and much, much, more.

There is a 403K which works the same as a 401k. They explained the reason they have 403K is because they are a nonprofit organization. They don't match though. They also offer the pension plan which everyone is enrolled in after a year and vested after 5 years.

So far my experience has been great. My understanding from most is that as a new nurse you would want to start there because they really teach their new nurses. Hope that helps.

Thank you so much for your reply!

I'm surprise to hear that Sloan likes to hire new grad :nurse: vs. seasoned nurses b/c I went to a job fair back in May and I talk to Sloan nurse recruiter and she said they're not hiring new grad at that moment and only hire experienced nurses. If you don't mind me asking, how did you apply to Sloan?

Thank you once again!!!

I am interested in applying to memorial sloan kettering. Do you have any information on the nurse recruiter there? My email address is [email protected]. If you can forward any contact info, that would be great. Thanks!

Where I'm at now, the night nurses (me included) take up to 9-12 patients each night. So, 5-6 patients per nurse is like walking in the park for us. One of my former classmate works at Sloan right now, she only takes up to 7 patients on the night shift.

So far, I have been on my unit for 6 months and I cannot wait until my 1 year is up so that I can go elsewhere. Sloan is definitely my #1 choice. I studying for my OCN certification and plan to take the test in June 09' and hopefully it will help me land a job at Sloan. Keeping my finger cross!!

Great News!!!!

I'm happy to announce that I'm leaving my current job soon and will be going to work for Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center as a outpatient chemo nurse. My intention was to continue working inpatient but there was NO position availabe @ Sloan and the HR offers me a outpatient chemo nurse position only b/c I have background exp on oncology and have administer chemo on my current floor. Of course I'm will to take it! I interview with the nurse leader and nurse manager @ Sloan. After a long process, I was finally offered and accepted the position. I'm so happy!!!! :yeah:

Sloan is so awesome in so many way. I think I'll spend the rest of my nursing career at Sloan. :nurse:
