Kings County Hospital Pharmacology

U.S.A. New York

Wanted to know if anyone has had any experience with the Kings County pharmacology exam, I need to take it and I have not a clue what is on it. Is it mainly math related which I hope, how many questions is on it, how hard should one prepare for it and any suggestions on how to prepare for it. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Thank you, Each1Teach1. If your interest is in Psych try a Substance Use Treatment Program, as most of the clients with substance abuse problems have also other Psych diagnosis. You get to do physical assessment, deal with meds, talk to the clients, etc and it is slower paced than a hospital. If you interested in Med Surg, an elder care program or a Residential Facility for Developmental Disabled is a good match as you would also be dealing with medical issues in adults with Developmental Disabilities/Mental Retardation. For Peds, try foster care or child care agencies. For Peds Psych, Residential homes for children often connected to a foster care agency. THe kids here have a lot of psych trauma and receive their treatment at residential facility. There are a lot of opportunities for RNs outside the hospital and they provide good experience. As for IV class, I had all my certifications at CPR123 and they have good teachers.

Thank you so much, estrellaCR! You're the best!! You've given me a fresh outlook. I'll definitely look into those places. Let me know how the KCH thing goes!! All the best!!!

Ok. Apparently I cannot reply to private message either. If you google "nursing pharmacology test questions", on the first page of the search, one of the links will have questions that will help you. Again, this is only for one of the exams so don't rely on just that because you may get the other. But these questions will help you out more than you expect (hint).

Hi Bear,

Does the study guide you say to google have exactly 60 questions? I would really like to narrow it down as much as I can... I am taking the exam very soon and am very nervous.:nailbiting: These exams seem harder than the NCLEX to me.

Ty

I just got a job offer from Kings County for D2 north and south, and I'm waiting to hear from HR. How was your experience with orientation? What are the evening and night shifts like?

Hi ECRN143,

The KCHC exam has a lot of med knowledge. Its 50 questions and you need 45 correct to pass. It has a few calculations which are easy but the med knowledge questions are challenging. I took mine in February and passed. Look over med administration, IV lines, blood transfusions, what to do if adverse reactions, and most common meds such as cardiac and cancer. That's what I remember of most was on there.

Hi enschraemli,

I started at Kings County in April and finished orientation 3 weeks ago. HR will contact you for pre-employment physical (at the kings county employee health office) to get medical clearance and to complete a lot of forms including background check. The background check takes 3-4 weeks and if all is clear, then they give you official job offer letter. Orientation usually starts the first Monday of every month. Orientation was 3 days of general hospital orientation with all new employees (policies, procedures, how the hospital is set up, etc). Then we had 10 days of nursing orientation which was review of nursing skills including IV, med administration, physical assessment, patient care, what to do during emergencies, etc.

Then you go on floor orientation or 6 to 10 weeks on you assigned unit where you will be paired with a preceptor and you will have a list of skills that you have to demonstrate before floor orientation is over. D2N and D2S are medsurg/rehab floors where patients also receive physical/occupational therapy in addition to nursing before they are let home. You will be on day shift 8am to 430pm for you floor orientation. After you finish floor orientation then you start your assigned shift. I am currently on evening shift which is 4pm to 1230am and it is not bad, I still get out and get home to sleep at a decent hour ( I chose evening over night shift, night shift is 12am to 8:30am). There is no difference in workload between shifts, unless something happens and a lot of patients are admitted at one time.

Thanks estrella! I've been out of school for a while so I have to study like mad. :bookworm::nailbiting:

I know it's been a while since I posted here, but I ended up not working at Kings County. The weekend after I got the phone call, I received a letter stating that I was not accepted for the position. I was really confused, so the next Monday, I called the nurse recruiter's assistant (who had called me the week before.) She told me that she called me by mistake, and that I should go by what the rejection letter said and pretend the phone call never happened. She also said that the nurse recruiter had something else in mind for me and that I would hear from her soon, although I never did. Honestly, I was very hurt and embarrassed because I had spent the past week excited over this opportunity that turned out to be false.

However, all is well on my end. I just got hired at Montefiore Medical Center on a med-surg unit. I guess I wasn't meant for Kings County after all lol.
