Hunter College Nursing

Hi my name is Lulu and I'm currently attending Hunter College. I am a 2nd semester freshman and am aiming to get into Hunter's nursing program. I always wanted to be a nurse since I was young growing up in Korea. I came to the U.S 4 years ago, so my english is still not perfected. Currently, I am worried, there is a lot of competition. I took last semester Gen Chem (B) Lab (A-) English (A-) Stat(B) and Psych(B-) so my overall is 3.166. I'm currently taking organic chem, and feel I am not doing well, overall i think I don't do well this semester. A lot of my friends who also want to be nurse are changing their majors, I am worried I will not get in. I don't know any other majors or career to pursue. Because I always wanted to be nurse. My adviser says I need to declare a major by the time i reach 60 credits, so I feel stuck. I hope anyone can give me some suggestions, comments, or guidance, thank you very much.

The path to the nursing program is difficult but do-able. I would suggest setting up study groups to help identify topics that are difficult to understand. The nursing program is set up by rank. 50% on NLN exam and 50% on gpa. So it's not all about the gpa although it would benefit your chances to get in.

    Hi Lulu,

Unfortunately, there is a lot of competition everywhere for nursing so I would definitely try to bring up the GPA. The GPA isn't the only thing that counts, but its an important factor since it counts as 50% of your application. Also, cast a wider net. Hunter isn't the only school with a nursing program. I know that it's an ideal school because it's got a great reputation and it's affordable, but don't count only on Hunter. You should definitely look into other programs and see what their prereqs and general education requirements are and try to fulfill some of them as you take courses at Hunter. When you apply for the generic pathway, you can also opt to apply to other schools and transfer into their programs. Also, since the NLN is the other 50% of your application, take enough time to prepare for it and try to do well. You should definitely aim to score 145+ on it to help better your chances of getting in given your current GPA. The NLN isn't terribly difficult, but you need to prepare and practice. Nursing is your dream so don't let anything stand in the way of it. You can definitely do it
