Hunter College Applications

U.S.A. New York

Published

Well I am going into my senior year in high school. I am currently studying in the Caribbean. I am planning to pursuit a career in nursing. I want to do my nursing degree at Hunter College in NYC. My current GPA is around 3.5 to 3.7, majority of my subject grades are A. As I was browsing through the requirements, I notice that I have to take American History as a prerequisite. Is American History hard?? Well the question I have is which program I should take? They have the Generic program and the Accelerated Second Degree, I read about it and I decided ooh I need to take the Generic Program but now I'm not sure which program is for students that just graduated high school. I know that I need to take the prerequisite courses. So do I apply to Hunter College for the prerequisites, then to the nursing program ?? The other question is , if so what should I apply under ??? Also if you have any other recommendations on schools that I should check out in the state, Please let me know. I'm sorry if you had to read all of this but it is really troubling me, I even thought about giving up my entire future and honestly this was not what I expect to be for my last year in high school. Please HELP ME !!! Thanks

No, American history is not hard subject!

You need to apply to the Generic Program, as the Accelerated programs at ALL universities/Colleges are designed for individuals who already completed a Bachelors Degree in another discipline. You will need to spend about 2-years doing prerequisites for the Nursing Program before being accepted into the nursing program. A lot of students do their pre-requisites at Community colleges and then apply to a school such as Hunter College. They do this to minimize the annual college tuition cost, since the tuition at the CUNY Community Colleges are about $1,500 (New York State Resident Tuition) to $7,000 (Out of State Tuition). It appears to me that you fall in the latter category since you are currently going to school in the Caribbean. Are you a legal resident of the US/New York State? Will you be attending using a Student Visa? You can also apply to the Nursing Program at some of these Community Colleges to get an Associate (AA) Degree in Nursing, where you can proceed to do an RN-BSN bridge to get your BSN Degree.

Other Nursing Schools you could apply to in New York City are (low cost Schools - BSN): SUNY Health Science Center (Downstate), Lehman College, etc. I'm not sure how things work at Hunter College, but again, you need to complete some/all of the prerequisites before entering the nursing program. Good Luck

SUNY Downstate doesn't offer the Generic BSN program any more. They only offer RN-BSN and an accelerated program. From what I understand, Hunter is extremely competitive nursing school to get into. You should also look into the AA programs at Community colleges and then bridge to a BSN program if the cost of attendance is an issue. NYU is also a good option if money is no object, since they accept a lot more students (3X-4X) than Hunter College

Thanks for answering my question, you have help me soo much well at least I'm not soo worried anymore. Do you recommend going to community college first to get the prerequisite or at a college. Honesty I was planning to go to college, but seeing all other posts and comments about hunter. They all talk bad about the college while my cousin says that it is a good college and I would be living the American dream there . I was also looking at Stony Brook, but I'm unsure. How many school you think I should apply to consider that I'm an international student which I think that my possiblities are less than an American. also is the sat like really hard ? Since I'm studying in the caribbean , they mostly focus on the CSEC .. So I don't know what to do , or what steps should I take next in my life. But thanks again for answering , it means soo much to me

Hi - I went to high school in the caribbean :) and had the pleasure to succeed with my cxc exams.

1. Are you a US resident or citizen ? That's important because it determines what type of tuition you pay.

2. Apply to do your prerequisites at BMCC - making sure that you get the list of courses you need from hunter.

3. Please note that - community colleges will still require you take a placement test for maths and English to see where you place because you didn't attend high school in NY.

4. After you've completed all hunters prereqs - then you apply to the program...

I think this will be your best route- unless your family has the money to afford hunter.

Best of luck !

Thanks for the info , I'm from Belize . Where are you from ? And I'm not a citizen or a resident so I would need to pay as an international student. Are you a nurse as well? Did you took the SAT ? Or did you just enter with your cxc. I was planning to not take it since it doesn't not count much in the states . Thanks for the recommendation !!

I sent you a PM, although you might not be able to respond since you do not have enough post on this forum. Not sure what you meant by "I was planning to not taking it"....the SAT or CXC? I think you need a certain number of CXCs to get into any of the CUNY schools or at least a High School Equivalency Diploma....that was the case years ago. I suggest you do both and try to do your best. See my PM for further details. Good Luck!!!

I was planning to not take the CXC . So does it count there ? I asked my uncle that is a teacher there and he said that it doesn't really count and that I should just take the SAT

If you don't mind , can you give me your email or any account that we can talk on because I can't answer in the PM. Thanks

Don't you have to take your cxc to graduate from high school ? You should take it and SAT.

You will also need your high school diploma certificate.

I had to bring all of these document plus my the community college credentials from back home .

So does it count there? Huh? I thought I answered that question!

You should start doing your own research instead of listening to the opinion of others. You will definitely need your CXC to be accepted at one of the CUNY Schools.

Not sure what the requirements are for the SUNY System, but I suspect the same. To get around the CXC requirement for CUNY schools, I believe you need a US High School Equivalency Diploma. Please do not take my word for it. Contact the schools directly by email or phone (if possible). Google will be your friend also. Pretty much any information you need is available online.

As for not doing your CXC; I think that is a bad idea. What happens if you cannot get into a US University/College? What happen you you cannot get a student visa? etc., etc. etc.

You should post your questions on this forum so other potential students from the Caribbean can benefi..t.no need to email me.[/TD]

I'm from the caribbean and as I'd stated before - cxc is a must to graduate and get a diploma. That diploma CUNY will need.

I agree you need to get on the phone with the school and get the information needed.

Please finish your school- get 1 and 2's in your cxc exams and take it from there.
