HELP!!! Two Job offers: NS-LIJ or St. Francis Hospital???

U.S.A. New York

Published

First let me say that I know that I am truly blessed to have these opportunities (particularly in this job market) so this post is in no way meant to be taken as me complaining. That being said:

I have two amazing job offers! NS-LIJ Critical Care Fellowship in Neuro ICU (Manhasset) and Med Surg Telemetry at St Francis.

The critical care orientation process at LIJ sounds amazing, intensive and thorough where as St. Francis orientation is short but I've heard that their nurses are trained very well and the hospital has magnet status (how much does that matter?) Both salaries/benefits are competitive and I've heard both good and bad for both in terms of work environment (and you don't ever really know the culture of a place until you get there). I could go on and on but at this point I am at a pivotal point and I genuinely don't know which way to go.

Does anyone have any insight into these two facilities or any advice on how I might come to a decision that I am ultimately satisfied with. Thanks so much in advance.

New grad here, so no advice, but congratulations darling!!!

For the NSLIJ fellowship, are you among the cohorts starting on March 14th? Can you please provide the steps to which you applied for the fellowship? Also, if you would be so kind to provide the e-mail address and phone number to the nurse administrator or recruiter for the fellowship? I am trying to go for their next fellowship in June or September. Thanks!!

Hi FeelinLikeHeelin,

I am in a similiar situation! Except I am between SFH & Winthrop. Did you end up going with NSLIJ or SFH? I agree that the orientation process at SFH is very short and that is a big concern of mine. SFH is for med-surg tele and the other job offer I have is for tele also but it has post open heart surgery patients right after the surgery.

If you chose SFH how are you doing there? Was it the right choice? This is so hard choosing between two good jobs.

Any advice would be wonderful. Thank you!

Julie, RN

Hello,

I am currently employed at LIJ, and was interested in the cc fellowship. I have friends who have done the program. It is indeed labor intensive, and I mean from a school-work standpoint. The fellowship consists of ten weeks of classroom time, followed by 3-4 months with your preceptor, then you go on your shift. The ask you for a two year commitment in your hired unit. It is mandatory nights.

My friends felt somewhat prepared after the fellowship, but truly learned mostly "on the job". The class stuff, I was told, was like nursing school, all over again. They both said they wouldn't go through it again, and much of it wasn't worth it.

The NSLIJ system is huge, but St. Francis, has far greater nurse satisfaction and yes, magnet status of course. I have done many semesters of clinicals at St. Francis, and I was consistently impresses with the caliber of nurses. Also, at St. Francis, there are no interns, no residents. The RN's report to the attendings, and are very respected. Also, at St. Francis, there is a clinical ladder for RN's, and many other perks, like loan forgiveness (they pay you monthly for your student loans if you start on nights, $500 per month pre tax)

Having said all of this, I am leaving LiJ for a piston @ St. Francis and couldn't be happier. I feel very lucky to join such a great hospital.

Hope this helps.

Good luck to you!

which one did you end up choosing?

hi kimbalotz,

how have you been liking St. Francis since leaving LIJ? Do you still stand by your comparisons between LIJ and St. Francis?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I am looking at both hospitals... Thanks!!

Hi all! I know this is an old thread but I thought I would give it a shot and see if anyone responds.

I am in the same situation. I have been offered a job at St. Francis and South Oaks which has been taken over by Northwell Health. I am so torn.

South Oaks is a Psych/Drug Rehab and I have always had a strong interest in Psych and I would love to eventually go into Psych nursing down the line but I don't want to start there. On the other hand, I have also been offered a job at St. Francis. I know it's a totally different field of nursing but I would like to get some Med/Surg experience behind me.

Any thoughts on which direction I should go? Also, to the person that left Northwell for St. Francis, are you still working there and if so how is it. I have heard so many mixed reviews.

Thanks a bunch!!

Eileen
