Hi everyone... So I am a senior in nursing school looking to apply for jobs/residencies in New York City in a few months. I feel like it is so competitive already to get nursing jobs there and i feel like everywhere I go there seems to be obstacles with me even applying!

So I have 2 C+ grades that prohibited me from applying to NYU's externship program last summer, and I just saw that they have the same requirement for the new graduate residency program! I absolutely cannot stand this requirement because its seems that some nursing schools are so much harder than others, and I feel like I am being punished for going to a more difficult school.

I actually know a girl who ended up being offered the externship position for NYU, and the school she attends is nowhere near as competitive or difficult as the school I am in now. And since I actually took summer classes at that school, and barely needed to open a book during them, I feel like I can say that the schools are NOT at the same caliber by any means.

Has anyone else had this problem? I reached out to someone at NYU about it and they basically said don't even bother applying because a C+ is unacceptable to them. It just makes me so mad because I worked so hard to get into the school that I am at now, and if I had just gone to a worse school, I would have had to struggle less and probably be a better candidate for NYU.

I am by no means saying that I am some kind of genius or that all other nursing schools are beneath me but I feel like this standard is unfair. If I passed the course by my own school's standards, is it really fair to exclude me from applying? I attend the school I do now in order to challenge myself, which I obviously have been, but I feel like NYU is completely not understanding of that. I feel like I am a strong candidate and have a 3.5 GPA so its not like all my grades are low.

Anyway, sorry for the rant, and I hope I didn't offend anyone or anything, I just am so frustrated with the job application process!

  4. What kind of class did you take at the school? How do you know it's not as hard? Did you take a nursing class there or a regular class? Just curious...Keep trying, you will find something that is a good fit for you!

  5. If it is any consolation, most friends I've had who worked at NYU didn't really like it. (With the exception of those in ambulatory care for fertility and oncology) With a good résumé the right job will come along eventually---just don't be too picky because it is tough right now. When I first graduated my mantra was "I can do anything if its only a year!"

NYP and IIRC several other local NYC metro area hospitals require/prefer new grads with a minimum overall 3.0 GPA. Some like NYU up the ante by adding adding a minimum of 3.5 GPA in nursing and or science classes.

While it may be sad and tough luck on some new grads facilities in NYC and elsewhere are moving to requiring or whatever at least a 3.0 or higher GPA. This mimics a trend that has been going on for ages now where mimimum GPA for those admitted into nursing programs averages at least 3.0 on the low end with a bulk of those admitted and graduating between 3.5 and 4.0 if not overall GPA at least in nursing and or science courses.

As for such requirements not being "fair", it is worth remembering these GPA requirements are only what get one into the door. New grads are subjected to a battery of exams, interviews and performance evaluations that further determine not only if they will be offered a spot, but if they will remain.

If it is of any consolation to you there are new grads with GPAs 3.0 or above that are taken into residency programs but are let go within the first year. It happens to grads even from such top schools as Hunter-Bellevue.
  7. The funny thing is though that I do have a GPA above 3.5...and I feel like they are just excluding me from the application process is unnecessary since I obviously made up for my C+s with other classes..anyway, I appreciate the input. Hopefully someone good will come along.
  8. Thats so true...I guess I will probably have to take a job that I might not love at first in order to get where I want to eventually. And that would be a consolation, except for the fact that i would LOVE a job in ambulatory care for fertility. Oh well. Thanks for the help though!
  9. I took 2 chemistry classes...a friend of mine who goes there for nursing described chemistry as one of her hardest classes. I realize that that I might not have the full picture, but I feel like it is still fair to say that some colleges are harder/better than others, and it doesnt seem right to just disregard that fact.
  10. With the number of new grads and even experienced nurses applying for jobs, hospitals have to find a cutoff point somewhere. For some, it's no new grads. For others, it's BSN required. For NYU, it's GPA. No system is perfect, and each will cause the hospital to lose out on some wonderful potential applicants. Your choices are to apply anyway (the worst they can do is say thanks but no thanks) or to move on to other hospitals. Is it fair? Not really, but unfortunately that's the choice the hospital made.
  11. General chemisty isn't *that* bad. OTHO organic chem is a whole other ball of wax! *LOL*

Back in the day it was possible to squeak through with a *C* and be done with things. However today many programs and even hospitals are looking for a minimum grade of 3.0 in science courses. Talk about pressure.

There was also a time when nursing programs had and probably some still do have "chemistry for nurses" type classes. Though considered *watered down* by purists these classes usually cover subject matter deemed necessary for nurses. The next best thing is to find science classes sectioned off just for nursing students. Often professors teaching such classes know what students are up against and historically some took pity on a poor nursing (or pre-nursing) student and "gave the A".

What was the other school that your friend went to? Did you attend the accelerated program?
