Failed out of college, do I still have a chance? SUNY orange nursing

U.S.A. New York

So during my freshmen year (2013) I was a biology major.. I did well but I had been raped on campus so I took a semester off and transferred to another university where I spent a year there. I battled with depression and suicide. Long story short I failed out. Looking back I should have taken more time off instead of rushing to go back but it is what it is. Now I want to go back again after taking a year off but I want to go for nursing. I only have A&P & Chemistry left to take before I apply for Nursing. Fortunately all of my pre req grades are good... unfortunately I have to send all of my transcripts and that's where they will see I've failed out. Being that these applications I'm filling out don't require me to have an interview or submit an essay I'm afraid my grade history will hinder my goal. Is there anyone who has failed out of college and gone back for nursing?

So sorry to hear about what happened, I can't imagine what that was like at all but I pray you find peace. As for nursing, I definitely think you have a shot! Are you applying to a BSN program or an accelerated program?

Don't worry about your failing grades, if you have retaken the courses and gotten a high grade I've heard that admissions likes to see you worked hard and succeeded the 2nd time around. Many programs don't require essays but you can submit one as a supplement to your application or some schools will ask for an explanation as to why your GPA is low or why you failed a class. But seeing that you did great in your pre-requisite classes, you for sure have a shot! Look around for more schools, I'm from New York and I know having a Low GPA really hinders your acceptance to nursing programs which is why I'm applying to a lot more out of state schools.

As a back up option, I'm also considering getting an associates in nursing where I can take the NCLEX and become an RN then do an online RN to BSN program. You should also look into that, your pre-reqs can transfer! It may take longer but there are accredited programs in the city that are easy to get into they just cost a lot more.

Let me know if you need any more information, I'd love to help !!

I'd look to private programs like Beth Israel or NYU; know the first at least does have an interview component as part of the admissions process. This would give you a chance to explain your situation regarding overall GPA.

Sadly the CUNY and SUNY programs which are the cheapest way to becoming a RN have vastly more applicants than open slots. The process is very cut and dry with little room for allowance of special circumstances, no matter how grave.

Best of luck and don't stop believing. Our Lord never closes a door without opening a window somewhere.

I am so sorry for what happen to you Ms. PaulinaK, but it seems to me you have picked yourself up and ready to move on. My story is quite different, I made one stupid mistake when I was young, immature, and foolish. I failed out of Kingsborough Community College and ended up with a felony in 1989. Twenty years later, I went back to Kingsborough and took a bunch of prerequisite classes towards the PA program. I did very well but not good enough to get into any competitive, medical program. Unfortunately, as a father of two young boys, with a baby on the way and a wife, I had to hold a full-time job and was not able to find a PA program gear towards the working class. Private colleges were too expensive for my liking, so when I found out Borough of Manhattan Community College of offering a Nursing program that fit my schedule, I transferred to the school in 2011. Keep in mind that when you transfer to anther school, your GPA starts at 4.0 again. The first semester, I had retaken the necessary class that I had a "Bs" from Kingsborough and obtained all "As"; thus made me eligible for acceptance into the nursing program at BMCC. I eventually graduated in 2013 and have been working as a nurse for The New York City Health and Hospital Corporation. I have also obtained my Bachelors in Nursing at New York City College of Technology, which was no easy task. During this time, I lost both my parents in less than four months apart and two months later had a house fire. Furthermore, I injured myself cleaning up from the smoke and water damages. I ended having to get a spinal surgery. I am grateful today that I had overcome life's hurdles and have the strength to continue on. So Ms. PaulinaK, to answer your question if anyone had failed out and gone back to nursing. Yes, I have failed in so many areas and rebounded and so can you. I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors and perhaps one day you will be the nurse that will make a difference and help piece back that broken someone that had gone through what you had to endure.
