Columbia University ETP Program 2013

U.S.A. New York

Published

The thread here for the Columbia University ETP program for entry in 2012 is pretty long (45 pages right now!), so I was hoping to elicit some of the same responses for those who are applying in 2013. Let's get to know each other!

Why are you applying to Columbia? What have you heard about the program- good, bad or ugly? Are you nervous, excited, ambivalent?

Looking forward to getting to know some of you!

Hey PNP,

I have been wondering about that! I heard that they had done away with ED, but once I started the application and I saw the option for it I assumed I had misheard. Thank you so much for clarifying that information!

Hi ARickli,

Did they mention anything about applying with 3 classes pending? I'm taking micro and physio this semester and Anatomy next Spring. When I called the admissions office, they said I can submit a mid semester report but it wouldn't be official. Any advice?

Hello everyone!

I'm applying to Columbia ETP too! Anyone going for the psych and mental health track?

Hey All!

I was thinking of applying for the psych route but I have decided to do the primary care FNP route. You can always change after you do your rotations in the program (except for changing into the WH and CRNA...those you cannot switch into)

Three questions for you all!

1) I cant trim 90 words from my statement...it is just over 2 pages. How much do you think I should sweat it?

2) I am taking the GRE this week...will get it in JUST in time before the deadline. On the application, can I put the preliminary score that is given to you at the test center?

3) did anyone get the email that they are giving those who submit the GRE's on time priority? What does that even mean...that they will read them first?

The second is probably a question I should just call about.

Wishing you all the best of luck!

Also, does anyone know if CUSON is need blind? I know their undergrad school is...

Hi lifeismuzik!

1) If I were you, I would try very hard to get rid of the 90 words so that it can fit within their guideline of two pages. I know that's easier said than done, but maybe you can reevaluate what minor things can be left out.

2) I took the GRE already and after the test they only give you the raw scores for QR and VR. They don't give you the percentile or the writing score (obviously). What you can do is just have ETS send your scores and what I was told when I called admissions was to write a letter asking them to hold your application until official scores are in. Then you just have to update them with the official scores.

3) I also got the email regarding that and I'm not too sure what it means. Does it mean priority in terms of you're more likely to be accepted (doubt it and hope not lol) or just like what you said; they'll read the complete apps first--which makes sense.

I think you should call them either way to double check. Let us know if they give you any new info regarding GRE scores! =)

Best of luck finishing up the application!

I got the email too. I think priority just means adcom reviews your application earlier. I feel like they would've told us if sending in your application would give you a better chance (like rolling admissions). The only other meaning I can think of is that you get your decision sooner? These are just all speculations; it's probably best to call admissions.

However, if your GRE scores haven't been sent or you are still waiting for fall grades (like me lol), it might be to your advantage that adcom chooses to review your application later. I imagine the more complete your application (and better grades/scores), the better. :)

Btw, does anyone know if we have to use a specific font for our personal statement? It doesn't say on the application, but will adcom assume we will use Times New Roman? Some fonts allows you to write more...

21 days until applications are due! Ah!

Less than three weeks to go! All I need are my letters of recommendation in hand so I can mail everything in!!!! So nervous!!!!

Do you think if need be we can hand-deliver our application on October 15th? I'm just very anxious that one letter won't come in time...

As to the personal statement, at the information session I went to earlier this year, they were pretty clear about the length, font size and margins. They want to be sure that you can follow directions! Try to be succinct.

I think that with regard to fall grades, you just need to provide them with a transcript or letter from your school explaining that one (or more) course is in progress.

Good luck to all applicants!

Thanks all. That was the sense I got too regarding the statement. It just stinks how short it is compared with other programs and give that they do not conduct interviews! One more q: does anyone have any average GRE or GPA info? I really don't understand why they have even so reticent to giving out their stats! Especially the GRE info :-/

@lifeismuzik- I don't think any average GRE or GPA is published, just over 50th %ile for GRE and over 3.0 for GPA. Again, going back to what I was told in the information session, there was a *little* wiggle room on both, especially if the applicant was strong enough in other categories.

Re-read the 2012 and 2011 applicant threads & see which applicants posted their stats and whether or not they got in. It seemed like most had strong numbers, but the numbers themselves didn't matter as much as the quality of the applicant (i.e. additional experience, compelling statement, etc.).

If you don't mind, what are your stats? What specialty are you trying to get into?

hey ya'll!

I asked admissions about the GRE email and they said it means the earlier you turn in your application, the sooner they will review it.

Also, if anyone else it wondering about the font type, the personal statement should be in Times New Roman.

@PMHN, Thanks!!! Do you know if they will tell us their decisions sooner? Or it's still going to be February, as in years past?
