Beth Israel 2012/2013 Applicants NYC

U.S.A. New York

Published

Hey guys,

I was wondering if anyone was applying to Beth Israel this fall or next Jan? Has anyone had an interview yet?

I have an interview with them next Thursday and was wondering if someone could give me an idea of how the interview process goes? This is my first choice school and really want to make sure I do everything I can to better my chances.

I was scheduled for the Open House back in Feb but had a last min. emergency so I missed it. I went in and personally handed in my application on Mar 1st. ( cutting it really close... i know). While there I spoke with Mrs. "*" and she was so helpful and nice. I also spoke with a male student who was playfully bugging her at the front desk and he was so cool. He told me about the teachers, the program, described his experience and says he loves it. He is part of the student government and was really helpful in answering some of my questions as well as Mrs. *.

So I would love to hear from other applicants. Has anyone applied to other schools besides Beth Israel? How do you feel about the PAX exam? (for those who have taken it or about to take it) Are you still waiting to hear from them or have you heard anything?

Also, if any current students could provide their take on the program, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and good luck to everyone!

I have mine this friday as well at hofper. I heard it is similar to the NLN. But im wondering if I want to go through the hassle of taking it now since I got into beth israel and it is my 1st choice. Hopfer came in as a close second. I have 2 weeks to send in the deposit for BI.

This is a little off topic (and lengthy!) but nonetheless about PBISON's requirements - so I'm hoping those who are already familiar with the program can clarify:

According to the website ATOP and Evening tracks are open only to those who have completed the liberal arts and science co-requisites.

Being that these are not offered in the Evening and ATOP tracks, where can I get these 8 classes fulfilled?

I assume most applicants get these out of the way at their community college prior to applying to PBISON, right?

Here's what I'm really interested in....

Let's say I take these classes this Summer/Fall and pass will a 4.0 GPA (and ace the PAX exam) there's still a chance that I wont get accepted to the program once I apply in March 2013, right?

I already have a non-nursing degree that is over 10 years old so I'm pretty certain I will need to take the prereqs again(which I dont mind) but I just want confirmation that my taking these classes again may prove pointless.

Whereas if I apply for the traditional track i will get either accepted or rejected without having taken the prereqs yet.

Is this more or less the case?

your two cents is appreciated!

Hi!

I have a bachelor's degree and I was accepted for Fall 2012 to start the progam with the ATOP schedule.

I took all of my prereqs at a CUNY school. They will take those transfer credits. I believe the only one I was missing was the Biomedical Ethics course.

The only exam that I know they require is the NLN.

Before I was accepted, I went on the interview and we discussed the various tracks. Let's just say you apply through one track and they believe you are a better fit in another track, they will let you know during the interview and have you considered under a different track instead (at least this was the case with me).

If hope this helps. If you have any questions, let me know :)

About the entering the program, since BI only does enrollment once a year (the fall is atop and traditional and evening is spring) you won't be considered until about march of 2013 so your right about that.

For pre-reqs, sciences have to taken within the last 5 years and the others can be older. (not sure how much older, some schools take pre-reqs up to 20 years old but call BI to make sure) I do think the more recent the pre-reqs are taken, the more weight the are given in regards to your application. (if that makes sense) For example, an A in psychology within the last year would be more substantial on your application that taken 20 years ago. For sociology, english, and intro to psychology, you can take the clep test. (clep.com) I did it for sociology. You study on your own for the test, register at a testing site and have the results to BI. I studied for about 2 weeks and earned college credit for the course. Its pretty easy. The rest I took at a community college and am still finishing them out. Still have Micro to and Philosophy to finish in the summer. So you can definitely apply before finish pre-reqs, but if you're applying for ATOP or evening program, just have a game plan to have them finished before the program starts. From what I read and from the interview, if you have one or 2 missing when classes start, they will still accept you into those programs.

As far as applying for traditional and not taking the pre-reqs, it can be done but I would advise against it. Nursing classes are tough with a ton of reading and one class will have a lab, lecture and clinical component. Add studying for pre-reqs on top of that will be a lot of work and hard to pass each class with the grade you want. If you feel you can do it, then go for it. But since the next enrollment isn't until next year, why not try to get some out the way. You would have more recent grades, they would be cheaper depending on where you go. (compare 150 a credit at a community college to 400 a credit at BI) and you would have less to worry once you get into the program.

I hope I answered your questions and it was helpful. Good Luck. :)

Nylady07 and Breukeln....thanks for the feedback.

I see that taking the pre-reqs at a community college might be the wiser choice and that some people are still in the midst of taking those prereqs when they submit their application.

But my main concern was that let's say I take the classes this Summer/Fall...When I apply in Feb 2013 there's still a chance(for whatever reason) that I still might not get accepted, right? Meaning I will have "wasted" my time and money on taking the pre-req classes.

I realize that this might be the gamble I need to make, but I justt want to be sure that I'm seeing this clearly.

Also, there seems to be about 7 pre-reqs needed, I gather I can try to take them this Fall and Spring, but must community college deadlines for Fall application has already passed....any advice!!!

I really want to have all lined up so i can submit my application by March 2013. Am I already too behind?

Thanks,

Alan

Hi Alan

Whenever you submit an application for school, you do run the risk of getting rejected. That's just the fact of the matter. I would recommend volunteer work at a hospital or in a clinical setting in order to increase your chances of getting in. I submitted my resume in addition to the other documents necessary.

There are quite a bit of prereqs to do and it might take you a little bit longer than a year to do them all at the same time. So I guess it might be too late but you never know :)

Make sure you get As or B+ at the minimum for Microbiology, Anatomy & Physiology I & II, and Chemistry. They look at that very carefully. For all of the other prereqs, Bs are fine.

I'm not sure when the deadlines for the community colleges are, but I would recommend just giving them a call and go from there. I would also check with the colleges to see if you are able to realistically finish all of the prereqs within the one year frame. Additionally, since you will more than likely be considered a non-degree student, you might have a hard time registering into the classes that you want. So I would take that into consideration as well when you make the phone calls. The schools should be able to answer your questions about that.

If you have any other questions, let me know.

I hope this helps and good luck :)

Breuklen,

Very helpful input, thanks!

Yes, I would be enrolling as a non-degree student being that I already have a BA.

I've been out of the education system for so long that I had this naive perception that I would just walk up to any community college and say, "I want to pay for these classes and start tomorrow, thank you."

The madness at Baruch's registration and bursar's office is now coming back to me!

In any case, I was naive thinking that I could take all of those classes this Fall/Spring and have most of them done by March 2013, guess that's a long shot.

I just learned that CUNY's Fall registration deadline was this past Feb, and now looking into late registration.

Thanks again.

I'm currently at Hunter College and they haven't registered for Fall 2012 yet. So there is still time. Just call them up and see if it's too late. Another school where you can take most of these courses would be at BMCC or LAGCC.

Hi Everyone,

I applied to PBI and am really worry like all of you. I applied at the end of Dec my composite score was 119 which is 81% and my Gpa is not that great. I do have a lot of working experience and volunteering. I hope my recommendations and essay they like. What do you think are my chances of getting in.

Thank you

My high school grades aren't that bad like 86 and College is 2.76 which is pretty bad. I already attended a nursing program but really wanna transfer to PBI. It seems like everyone here are in good academic standing. I feel my chances are pretty bad.

I just got an interview scheduled! Yippeee! I've been waiting anxiously because I got into Cochran and need to turn in my deposit, but Beth Israel is my first choice for a few reasons. How likely is it that getting called for an interview means you'll be accepted? I got a 147 composite on the NLN exam and think my recommendation letters and essay were strong, BUT I messed up my pre-req GPA with a C+ in Microbiology (summer school was a mistake), have only some recent volunteer work as experience, and my undergrad degree from another field was crappy 2.71 GPA. So I'm nervous about this interview since I think I'm probably on the borderline for what they want.

Don't worry about it K8aline, once you have an interview, you pretty much in. (The interviewer will tell you the same thing). The interview is pretty laid back so dont be nervous. Re-read your essay because they will refer back to it. I believe the interview is basically to see if you would have any scheduling issues when attending and to get a feel of you as person so just be yourself..

Congratulations!!!

Which track are you planning on entering? Trad, atop or evening?
