Stony Brook and Binghamton University accelerated BSN program


Hello,
this is my first post here. I applied to Stony Brook and Binghamton University. Can anyone who are in the accelerated program give me some idea on how competitive their programs are? What was your GPA when you get in? any previous hospital experience? I have a 3.7 GPA in biochemistry and my prerequisite is 3.9. But I don't have any hospital experience.

I know that in Binghamton nursing program, students always need to travel far way to other hospitals (even to syracuse in some cases) for clilnicals. I know Stony Brook has its own hospital, do the nursing students still need to travel to other sites (by car) for clinicals?

also, when did you guys know whether you get accepted?

I am not sure about Stonybrook, but Binghamton has many clincials other than Syracuse. You should talk to the Nursing Department and ask if it is possible to switch clinicals due to lack of transportation.

Even though Stony Brook has it's own hospital, not all clinicals are in that hospital. My GPA was 3.6 for the accelerated BSN program, and I had no hospital experience, but great recs and a great essay Good luck!

I graduated from the BAT program at Binghamton a few years ago. In terms of clinicals, the vast majority are in Binghamton/Johnson City at one of the area's three main hospitals. For some rotations such as peds there were options to go to Syracuse where there are better experiences to be had, but no one was ever forced to travel out of the area. It's still a good idea to have a car though, but there were some people that got by without one.

I attended the Stony Brook accelerated program in 2005-2006. The clinicals can be somewhat spread out to hospitals that you might need a car but the professors are very accommodating when they make assignments on who goes where. If they need to send you to another hospital and if you don't have a car they will have other people in the group w/ cars so you can carpool. It always worked out so don't let that be an issue. I'm sure Binghamton is the same way.

I know u went to Stony - so my question is I graduated in '99 w/ a BA In nutrition and have ten yrs experience as Dietitian and wanted to switch careers but my GPA not that good. Do I have a good chance?

My GPA was only 2.79 from my undergrad but i did very well in the additional courses I took as pre-reqs for the program. They take in consideration what you have been doing career wise for since graduation so it sounds like you have been successful as a dietition. They also base entry on your interview and your essay so as long as you can impress them I think you still have a good chance of getting in. Good luck!

Thank you so much for replying! I really appreciate it. My GPA is around there too, but I'm not required to take any pre requisites as I already have all those listed classes. I know I can get good references and work on the statement letter. Oh I didn't know they had an interview as well, it makes sense though. Thanks Gain!

Heyy I just sent in my application..i wanted to get an idea on what everyone's volunteer experience and GPAs are. I have a 3.585 in my major and a 3.979 in my prereqs...but i still need chem( i thought they would accept an AP grade) and am taking microbio right now. I don't have any volunteer experience but I have great recommendations and a good essay. I am really nervous that this is not enough for such a competitive program. Will they even consider me since i have no finished all the pre-reqs.

That's a good GPA. Do you have any experience/volunteer work in the healthcare setting? And as far as the pre-req's are concerned, they just want you to complete before classes start, it's ok if you don't have all of them now in the application process. GOOD LUCK!
